I see where John Deere offers a 540E option on their PTO which reduces engine rpm by 1/2 while maintaining 540 rpm shaft output. They claim a 25% fuel savings.

It's not 1/2, it's 1/4. When I am in 540E, 1700=540, in 540 it's 2400. I suppose it could be different on other models but notice that the engine RPMs are 25% higher in 540 vs. 540E (the math for the fuel savings). It's nice when doing lighter work...

That said, when you're in 540E, the foot and hand throttle (ridiculous terms for a diesel but that's what they call them) are physically limited to 1700RPM. Granted it's adjustable, but it is designed specifically to not be over-revved.

My father in law has an old International that had an off set PTO. I made a chain drive offset for him 20 years ago. It is one to one but any gear ratio could be used. I mounted it on the mower. If you have room to do that, it is fairly simple to do. I had to use a bush hog type shaft with a shear pin at off set. I had to put a new chain on it last year. That was the first repair in 20 years.

Bob: I have the sister tractor to yours its a L2350 25hp 21pto I have a ber vac 2 stage blower 63inch and I have never had any problems blowing snow had it where the snow is coming back over the blower and it still keeps on blowing, I also run a 10kw tiger power pto gen with no problem My drive line of my tractor is the same as yours if u put are tractors side by side they look like twins. my low range is very slow. the ber-vac blower is a direct drive no gear boxs at all so the impeller is only turning 540 the blower has 4 paddles maybe thats the difference if yours only has 3 unless bota changed the gear ratio on your model. Like u said your tractor and mine are very basic.

... I'd like to have a PTO generator, but I'd like one that ran with about half the pto speed, so the tractor could just idle along @ 1250 - 1300 rpms...

Don't forget that if you do this, the tractor develops less power at the lower RPM so the generator size (KVA) you can run will be smaller also. Not a problem if the tractor is large enough and the electrical load is small enough.

I had a similar problem when I converted a 3ph tiller to front mount on my F2400. The tiller was designed for a PTO speed of 540 rpm but the low range speed of my pto was 1100 rpm. My local Kubota dealer had a bin of 2:1 gear boxes so I installed one between the tiller and the pto. I used the gear box to reduce rpms but you could run one the other way to increase rpms. However, the gear box I have also reverses shaft direction - a feature I needed but may not suit your needs.

This is the first time a Grey Market tractor would be better. We have 540,750, 900 and 1100 rpm PTOs.

Or, in the case of my Yannie, 540, 900 and 1:1 :)
