I have a 2510 Long when I try to engage to lever to turn on the pto it grinds and won't allow me to engage.

this long has a syncro, feature, does this have something to do with it not engaging ?
Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you. JOE

Same thing on my FarmTrac 535. 2-stage clutch is supposed to interrupt power to transmission with the pedal part-way down, then disconnect the PTO when fully down. After I tried adjusting to the max, I called the dealer and he said, "new clutch, $1500 for a tractor with FEL." Temporary workaround is to engage the PTO with the engine stopped, then start -- might be hard on the starter as a regular procedure, but should be Ok for occasional use.

I'm assuming both of you folks have gear transmissions with 2-stage clutches (Tex5String definitely does).
Normally, about all you can adjust is the pedal freeplay. If that doesn't help....time for a new clutch, I'm afraid.
Two questions:
1) How many hours are on your tractors (clutch should go for well over 1000 hours).
2) are you "riding" the clutch (even just resting your foot on the clutch pedal)?

Hello sir,

And thank you and Tex for your replies. Mine has just over a 1000 hrs on it, and not I try never to ride the clutch, On mine you can turn the lever to the right as well for this sychro. thing which I dion't understand,
Is it the clutch in the pto housing you are speaking of ? or the tractor clutch

I was referring to the tractor clutch.
Let me ask a couple of questions:
Do you have to push in the tractor's clutch to engage your PTO?
If not, how is your PTO engaged?
The lever you describe...is the purpose to change direction (forward to reverse and vice versa)?

Per TractorData.com Long 2510 tractor information, you have a "Live" PTO. That normally refers to a PTO engaged by a 2-stage clutch (as Tex5String described).
The "synchro" you refer to is normally in the transmission and allows gear shift changes while in motion. My old 790 Deere was a non-synchro transmission and I had to stop to shift gears.

A 2510 has a hand level to raise on left hand side of tran gear shift lever. That has to be raised before manuelly moving the pto lever to the right, which is located a head of the seat, on top of tran housing. Slowly lower hand lever down for engagement. If it won't engage with hand lever up, pto clutch dics is worn or frozen to the flywheel.

I used to own a long 510 dtc 4x4. What trac said is correct the pto clutch control is on the left top of trans. pull up the lever and move the pto engage lever which is infront also on top of trans. this works both ways on mine ground drive and engine drive depending on which way the lever is moved. lower the hand clutch slowly to engage the pto. there might be a small amt of gear noise while engageing the small lever, but it can be controled with the speed of the engine (slowed )down to idle.Hope this helps

If your tractor has the hand lever on the side of the trans top cover, how much free travel does it have? If it has more than an inch or 2, try adjusting it up a bit. there should be a link on the side of the trans from the lever down to the cross shaft for the PTO clutch release bearing. There is a threaded adjustment somewhere on that link with a lock nut. Shorten that link a few threads, reducing freeplay and increasing the stroke of the clutch release process on the inside.
