Hi everyone, I've got a 2007 JD 2520. I've got a technical problem with the PTO I've never heard of/seen before. Did a search via this forum and not much came up. Wondering if any fine folks on this forum have seen this issue....

Basically, when using the rear PTO/snowblower, I'm noticing the PTO is not shutting off fully when I push in the PTO switch on the dash. If left to spin with little to no resistance it actually spins quite fast.. speed goes up as I increase RPMs. Only way I can make it stop is by backing into a snow pile, then it seems to come to a stop finally. it's intermittent. sometimes it works properly again, but the it seems to act up. When it acts up, ssame thing happens, after blowing snow, I shut off the rear PTO and the shaft keeps spinning.

I thought maybe my fluid levels were low, so i checked them but they appear fine (middle of the site glass, etc) I also thought this was a weather thing. It's approx -20C this time of year.

Fortunately, I'm not loosing PTO power when using the blower in full operation and the systems seems to be operating properly, otherwise.

One thing I haven't tried yet is flipping back/forth with the mid/rear PTO switch to see how that affects this behavior (might try that tomorrow).

Appreciate any advise or feedback. I really hope I don't have some kind of a problem in the transmission :(

Thanks,

Gord

The PTO brake is not working. It should stop quickly and you should not be able to turn the shaft by hand with the engine off.

I don't have a problem but this is good to know. I did not know the pto had a break...yet another value of this site.

Oooooo..sounds complicated to fix! Thanks for the exploded diagram. How much of the machine do I need to tear apart to get to this brake? I've got a shop manual on order. I hope it gives a little detail on this procedure.

It's fairly common to see a minimum of continued movement after turning the pto off. Many farm tractors in my experience have done that. You could usually stop the shaft from turning by dragging your open hand on the shaft.

However, it sounds like your tractor has a more significant problem with continued "power" on the shaft.

Is there an external adjustment linkage for the pto on your 2520?

(I look at the JDPart's site.. but it's already past midnight!)

Contact the dealer, it may still be uder warranty.

AK, the PTO is electro-hydraulicly activated, there are no external adjustments.

Ive got a 2006 with about 600 hours on it. This problem is just starting to rear its ugly head for me. Right now, as akfish mentioned, is very mild and could be stopped by hand. However, it never used to do this, and I fear it will get much worse.

Mine started happening this summer during hot weather, and does it with both the mid and rear ptos.

Does anyone happen to know about how long this would take a fairly experienced person to tackle?

The PTO clutch and brake are operated by the same hydraulic pressure. The brake is actually applied by mechanical spring pressure and released when hydraulic pressure is applied to the clutch.

So, it could be that the PTO electric solenoid is leaking pressure into the clutch system, causing release of the brake and partially engaging the clutch. This could be an easy fix, since the solenoid is mounted to the outside of the transmission and can be serviced without getting inside. The PTO clutch pressure can easily be tested with a gauge by your dealer.

If that's not it, then some amount of disassembly has to be done to get to the mechanical components of the PTO clutch.
