PTO not engaging

I have a 2012 Kioti DK45HSE diesel tractor. The PTO does not consistently engage. If I turn it on the indicator light on the switch does light up, but the PTO doesn’t turn. Sometimes if I drive around, it’ll suddenly engage. Or other times I will turn the tractor on and off and start it again and then it does work. But it’s just not consistent. What are the possibilities and how can I troubleshoot it? I did some preliminary research and some sources point to a solenoid. I know about the fuel shut off solenoid, but I don’t know where the PTO solenoid is if there is such a thing. Can’t seem to find it in the parts manual either.

Boy have you come to the right place... I have this exact tractor and I HAD the exact same issue... A dude on here (Grsthegreat) pointed me to the right place. Behind your front cowling is a relay. Its a $30 dollar part. Not really easy to get to (by may standards) but only took me about an hour to replace and FIX this issue.

With mine, the rocker switch would light up but the dash PTO light would not come on. As you said sometimes I would drive it around and it would suddenly work again. I thought a few times I had fixed it but not until I replaced the relay that governs it.

Let me look for the thread, it has the diagram in it and all.

Kinda odd, I think this has been troubling me for a few years and I didn't tie it together until recently. When I crank the DK45SE and immediately start the PTO by engaging the rocker switch. It often doesn't come on at first usually. I leave the rocker switch in the engaged position and drive...

Wow. Thanks. it definitely sounds like what my problem is. The link you sent regarding the solenoid relay and the solenoid itself doesn’t really clearly explain where each of those are. Says that the solenoid relay is under the steering column or under the instrument panel. Not 100% clear do they mean the cylindrical grey plastic shroud around the steering column or the actual instrument panel. Seems like that instrument panel would be a bear to get off. Also, I don’t see any clear instructions about finding the actual solenoid itself.

These are not in the engine compartment, there under the steering wheel cover section.

Yeah you have to remove that shroud and its behind/under there. Looks exactly like the picture GRsthegreat included in his post. My memory is fading of what I had to remove (bolts etc), but that is the spot.

Ya, its the relay. There are a few screws that hold the plastic on.

Kioti uses this same twin relay on alot of different functions on the tractor.

I have issue with intermittent windshield wiper operation on mine now. The same twin relay located in right side support column is acting up. I will be replacing it later today.

I have 4 spare twin relays on shelf.

Funny this thread comes up as in the last couple weeks my PTO had a slight delay then a couple days ago would not come on until I goosed the throttle a little. I thought is that a clue or just a coincidence.

Those relays, when they go bad, they randomly simply delay working. Not sure why. Right now, my front windshield wiper switch will light up but wiper wont activate….but if i leave switch on, in a minute or two the wiper starts.
