What do you suppose caused the gears to break? Did you hit something while brush hogging? Do you have the right shear bolt in your drive shaft?
Nice to see how clean it is inside that housing, looks like the fluids been changed regularly anyway.............
Looks like a fairly major undertaking now to fix it, but nothing that some time, money and talent can't repair, I'm sure you'll have it good as new sson.

Well I got the tractor "split", it really is not that hard and only took about an hour. Getting the two halve aligned to put it back together will be a little more difficult.

Here is a picture of the tractor split...

Jagmandave,

I was cutting some brush that had some pretty good size 3" diameter small trees. I figured the shear pin would break before my tractor did. The differential was pretty clean, but there is a lot of metal in the case from the gears getting chewed up. -Keith

One more pic, a closeup of the broken gear.

I hope I can get parts!

Keith,
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I think the pictures are extremely valuable. Thanks for posting them. Now I have an idea whats there and what could go wrong. I wish everyone would do this.

By the way, I was noticing this weekend while using my tiller, that this could definitly happen from the pounding it takes. Something to keep in mind if you have one.

I must say, that's some pretty fancy wrenching for a medical rep. By the way, I would make sure that shear bolt is only a grade 2. It certainly should have sheared.

Thanks normed2001,

There are not any "grade markings" on the shear bolt, but I will definitely replace it with a grade 2.

The PTO always made a tick when turning. Now that I have had it apart I think that noise was from teeth missing on those gears.

It is very satisfying to take your tractor apart and get it fixed with your own hands.

-Keith
