pto on century 2028

I have had my 2028 for about 3 years and use it mostly for snow removal. Recently I purchased a 5' rotary cutter. When I hook up the cutter the pto lever will not shift into 540, it just bumps the gears. When I unhook the shaft I can get it to shift into 540. I thought maybe the pto shaft or gearbox on the cutter was stuck, but when I checked it I can turn it very easily by hand. I hooked it up several times but still can't get it to shift into pto. Anyone ever had this problem. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Are you pushing the clutch pedal all the way down, while trying to engage the PTO?

Is there a chance that the limit switch the shift lever activates could of got out of adjustment? It might cause it to jump out under load if it isn't getting fully engaged.
It happened on my 3035.

When you say "bumps the gear" do you mean they grind? I had that problem occasionally engaging the pto on my Branson 3510. Adjusted the clutch free play down to about 3/4" and it goes cleanly into gear every time now. Also, that clutch pedal has to be pushed down with the ball of your foot. If you clutch with your heal or arch, the back plate stops your foot from getting the pedal all the way down.

I had a similiar problem. Adjusting the clutch free play solved it.

Be sure that the pto shaft is not too long,They can be out of the box, As you raise the mower the shaft gets shorter possibally causing it to bind. Be sure that when the implement is lifted about 6" off of the ground that you can remove the shaft off of the coupler(tractor not running). If not- there is not enough free play in the shaft and you will need to shorten the shaft.We use a chop saw
