I have just purchased a nortrac 204. I am having trouble keeping the PTO in low gear. When I attach an implement the control handle begins to vibrate and jumps into neutral. The high speed runs just fine. If nothing is attached the low speed operates just fine. Can I access the PTO gears by removing the pto cover. there are two covers, the PTO and one above it. There is one gasket which goes under both covers Any ideas about what might be wrong??

I have just purchased a Nortrac 204. It only has 3 hours on it. I am having trouble with keeping the PTO in low speed. When I connect a implement and put the PTO in low speed the speed control handle begins to vibrate and it jumps into neutral. the high speed operates perfectly. If there is no implement attached the low speed runs fine. Can I access the PTO gears By removing The Pto cover plate?? There are 2 plates on the rear, the plate that holds the PTO in place and one just above it, there is one gasket for both plates. ANY IDEAS??

Over-applied paint has been known to collect on the bottom of that lever. There's a history of the excess paint actually stopping full travel of the lever into the 540 position. Inspect first, then remove as required. See if that helps before you start pulling other stuff off

The vibration does not sound right to me, You say you can feel it go into that speed ?

You will have to remove the lift box to see .........

Thanks will check for excess paint!! If I don't have an implement attached the slow speed seems to run just fine!! Yes I can feel the gears engage but then it starts vibrating and jumps out of gear!! Again if an implement is not attached the PTO will run smoothly at the low speed.

It vibrates with any PTO driven attachment?

It starts vibrating when you start increasing rpm??, as soon as you engage the pto?, start using the pto??

Ranch Hand It starts vibrating when I use the slow speed. I can run the pto in high speed (1000 rpm) and the implement will operate fine It does not jump out of gear at high speed. At low speed I have trouble engaging the gear then it will start to turn, then vibration, then it jumps to netural but I can then put it into high speed and it operates just fine. If I don't have the brush hog attached I can operate the low speed Pto and it turns fine.

It's engaging in the 1000 OK and not the 540 ? have you tried holding it in the 540 with your hand or a rubber strap ? we had a few that were miss drilled where the check slice is (the piece with the ball detent ) not allowing it to fully engage
