PTO QUESTION

Haven't used my tractor yet but just looking over the pto will turn by hand about 30 degrees back and forth and lock.Just back and forth about 30 deg is all the motion. It hits a stop of some sort an I hear sound of contact inside rear end.
Just curious about that. All tractors I know turn freely when disengaged.

Tractor is new and pto never used. Thought I would ask. Might learn something. Haven't engaged yet.

Tractors with Independent PTO usually have a PTO brake to keep the shaft from turning when not in use.

My 4410 John Deere does the same thing. It's so you can align the splines on the pto shaft to facilitate hooking up.

Kool I have struggled with that trying to get a dirty shaft hooked up and the shaft keeps scooting ahead of alignment.

I have had times where I needed to rotate an implement to check something. Sounds like in that case I will have to unhook the PTO.

What ever it does I guess is OK. Just did not want to be fearful of some kind of crunch when I first turned the PTO on. Hit the button with confidence and whak them bushes. Forty nine HP is gonna feel good.

For anyone who needs to know.
- With engine off, the PTO can be turned by hand 20-30 degrees back and forth. Probably it is enough rotation to always allow matching up to splines.
- With engine on, the PTO cannot be budged. No turning by hand not even a wiggle.
- The PTO can be turned freely by hand once it has been engaged such as when you are mowing and then you just put the tractor in neutral, turn PTO off and lock parking brake. Under these conditions you can rotate equipment while still hooked up. Just be sure no one is close to the PTO switch when you are doing this of course.
