PTO quits at 1000 rpm on 4710

We are trying to run a John Deere hay conditioner behind my 4710 tractor. We selected 1000 rpm on the lever, correct speed for the implement. The PTO engages , then disengages after about 10 seconds and the warning triangle lights on the instrument cluster. It works correctly when set for 540 rpm, but that really slows you down. I can't find this anywhere in the owners manual. I figured twice the speed maybe half the torque? Is the implement too much resistance for the PTO system? That doesn't seem right for a 100 hp tractor. If you disengage it will reset, then repeat. Thanks for any suggestions.

Well lack of torque or oomph is definitely not the problem. Will your 1000 rpm PTO work OK with other implements or have you tried it? Possibly a conflict with some other setting on the tractor. My first guess is it has nothing to do with the hay conditioner but is something going on with the tractor. I'd ask the dealer what is going on here.

Thank you. After more research and calls, turns out you have to change the PTO shaft. You can't use an adapter. There is a doo hickey on the shaft that tells the tractor its 1000 rpm. Thanks again.

Gearboxes hydraulic motors are rated 540 or 1000
so running a 540 pump at 1000 will have problems

I'm supremely glad I don't have your issue. All I have to do is switch stub shafts from the 540 six spline to the the 21 spline 1000 rpm stub which takes the removal of an internal C clip on the shaft end and pop in the 21 spine, 1000 rpm pto shaft stub. Even my tach is marked for 640 and 1000 pto speeds. In the old days, tractors came with both the 1000 rpm and the 540 rpm stubs sticking out of the gearbox end but that has changed and now most use flip shafts instead.
