I've been busy with PTO tiller attached. I had two safety chained hooked up and heard a clank during using and found one of my chain laying in the dirt -- the clip was bent. There must have been quite a bit of force to break that clip. Should I be concerned or just get a new clip and hook it back up? thank you

Those chains keep the shield from turning allowing the driveshaft to turn inside it , Those do need to be lubed . They actually have plastic like grease zirks on each end , I would just hook it back up .

Wait what?!? That's what those eyelets are for? To keep the shield in place and the shaft spins in it?!? I only have a few old, used pto implements, that didn't have any chains or anything, so never knew.

yep, the shield is supposed to be stationary with the shaft turning inside it.
Many times the chains never get hooked up though.

Lube the PTO shield. You might even have to take the shield off the PTO - clean up both shield and PTO shaft - lube the shield - reassemble.

I broke both of the plastic clip points on my Woods BrushBull so the PTO shield turned freely. I ended up putting a hose clamp around the shield with the chain clip threaded through it. it works just as it's supposed to now.

After my shield got buggered up tilling.....again.....I just took that dang shield off for good...and don't plan on repairing it or replacing it.

Cheers,
Mike

The shield on my mower was such that it made it extremely difficult to put onto the PTO stub. I took it off. No body will be near it while it's operating. If I get off to make an adjustment, I wait until it stops completely, I've got lots of time and lots of respect for what can happen with rotating shafts.
