Ok, changing out this pto shaft seal on my '89 3910 really isn't that big of a deal. Except I reassembled it all and left out the bushing the seal runs on because I was in a hurry to go watch my Razorbacks whoop up on MSU. Anyway, I got it all back in the machine, after a little adjustment to that pesky internal ring way up in there. Then, I started adding hydraulic oil and noticed oil was pouring out around the shaft. That's when I realized I had left out the bushing. So, I had a choice, 1) Pull it all back out and disassemble it all again or, 2) Tap the bushing on from the outside. I chose the easy way and tapped it in while everything was still on the tractor. Worked like a charm. Has this happened to anyone else, and how did they fix it?

Is the bushing simply held in place by friction on the shaft?

Yes. Metal to metal press fit. It wasn't too easy to push it on there. I used a long 5 grade bolt as a punch and a 12oz ball peen hammer to tap it on. So far, so good. I ran the pto for about 10 minutes and it doesn't leak a drop. If it starts back to leakin, I guess a tear down and a new seal will be on order. I was just wondering if anyone else ever had to put that sleeve/bushing on from the outside. And if so, did it stop leakin?

Sounds like you fixed it!!!!

I've not had to work on that portion of mine so didn't even know the bushing was there. :)

So you're able to "pick" it out of the case and reinstall from the outside?

Im not sure about your tractor, but there's a shoulder inside the bearing housing on my '89 model that wont allow the seal to be changed without pulling the shaft. And yes, that washer way up in there did slide about a half a hole off while I was pressing apart and re-assembling the components on my hydraulic press. I just used a thin strip of wood to re-align the washer and it stayed in place long enuff for me to go back in with the shaft. The bearing housing has to be pressed off the shaft after the retainer ring is removed to access the seal from the inside on this model. Now on my old '66 4000, all I had to do was remove the bearing housing and the shaft stayed put. The seal pried right out and the new one went right back in from the outside, so no pressing bearing out. Ford should have left it that way.
