PTO shaft broke

I just found out that the PTO shaft for $160 wouldn't even work....it's way too short. My min length is around 60" and the max length on that shaft is 58". Lucky I didn't order that one! I am looking here now: La Magdalena PTO Shafts LaMagdalena shafts from Spain.... quality should be good. Price is a lot more at $240 though.

Good thing you measured that before ordering!!!!

Another thing to consider is how both the cutter's gearbox and the tractor's PTO will be protected. Does your current PTO driveshaft have a shear bolt or slip clutch?
It should have one or the other and that should have prevented the damage to your (broken) PTO shaft (unless the shaft had been damaged previously, as you wrote in your first or second post).
If a slip clutch, it may not have been adjusted properly. If a shear bolt, it may have been the wrong grade.
If you have the manual for the cutter, it should tell you which grade bolt to use. If a slip clutch, it may even have instructions on setting the slip clutch.
Here's a Kodiak manual, but I don't know if it's for your model cutter:

If this manual does cover your cutter, you need a grade 2 shear bolt. Kodiak may even be a good source for the PTO drive shaft.

Thanks Roy. Just a little while ago I found this same manual online and realized that the part # the woman at Kodiak gave me might be incorrect. I measured my u-joints and it looks like I have a series-5 shaft instead of a series 4. What's more, the part # the woman gave me is for a PTO shaft with shear bolt, and I need one with a slip clutch.

I think you're right that the slip clutch was adjusted improperly, because I didn't noticed it slipping before....even when I went over a few big stumps. To be honest, I didn't even know this thing had a slip clutch before I broke the shaft.

I think I have found the correct generic part number now, which is CS53516. I will confirm this with Kodiak before ordering though.

I don't know anything about that company, but seems like a good price to me.

Weasler is the brand that tractor supply carries, Weasler has a good reputation in ag industry.

Can't a place that fixes drive shafts take care of it? Even one that does heavy trucks (Class 8) should be able to fix it.

Seems like new is now the best way to go. I wouldnt toss that old shaft away though. It may still come in handy some day. You may find some replacement tubing and new u-joint bearing to fix that one up better than new. In foreign countries, it never hurts to have a spare part lying around.
Heck when I was on a job in Peru, the contract called for a complete machine shop with 36" lathe so they could make just about any part needed to keep the LNG plant running. Most people dont have that luxury, but there are a few TBNers here that do have some nice machine shops.

Yep, Kodiak gave me the wrong part number! I need 113-72SC, which is a series-4 with slip clutch.

I'll look into Weasler, thanks Tag01. I've definitely decided I want to order a new, good quality unit. This shaft I've got is in really bad shape.

I just realized you're from Arkansas, Gary. I was born & raised in Fayetteville.

I have found a reasonably priced PTO shaft that would work for me at $208 on this site: A-CS43516, (Miscellaneous), Economy PTO,

Has anyone bought anything on this site before? Part number CS43516 seems to be a generic shaft that many companies carry, but this site has the best price.

Thanks

Based upon one of your previous posts:

Isn't this one too short too?

Thanks Roy.... it's true, this one is also short. I need something with a collapsed length of 56". That means spending $380 + shipping + import duties for the original Kodiak shaft, or $250 for a heavier duty series-5 or 6 shaft. I think I'm going to go for a heavier duty shaft...
