PTO Shaft Cap

My understanding of the cap is for safety. With the cap installed nothing can get wrapped around the PTO in the event that it was engaged by one of those accidents that is never going to happen but does. Kind of like the plastic guard aroud the shaft itself that keeps stuff from getting wrapped up in it when it is running. .

On the subject of tethers....

How do you all keep the things (I forget the right name) that plug into the bottom of hitch pins for attachments you use with the drawbar? I started using 14 gauge wire (from my endless supply of short, why do I keep this, pieces of Romex) as a tether. Any other solutions?

I keep my PTO spline greased really well. When I remove a drive to some piece of equipment, I put the cover back in place to keep dust and muck from collecting in the grease. It's also funny that people who swear by their safety devices like guards, etc. will not see that a cover could add an additional factor of safety if for some reason the PTO were to be engaged when equipment was not attached. As long as I have one, I will replace it when the PTO is not in use. If I didn't have one, I don't think I'd lose any sleep over it though.

I called my dealer, asked for parts and asked if they had one in stock. Then I mentioned my tractor had just been delivered without one. The parts guy asked for my name, my salesman's name and said he'd call back. Two days later a PTO shaft cap arrives in the mail! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif The cap is in a small paper bag which was put in a small box for mailing. The paper bag has my name and address written on it along with the note, "Please mail and charge to Sales.".

I didnt have a pto powered implement until i had the tractor for a year, the cap probably stayed on until then. Afterwards I MAY replaced it for awhile after taking off the b'hog
but doubt it. For awhile I would run across it on the ground or in the barn but havent
in the last 4 or 5 years. The same goes for the spring that connected the lower links
and kept them from swinging when a 3pt implement wasnt used.

I always keep the cap on my rear pto shaft whenever it is not in use for the reasons others have already stated: safety and to prevent dirt and mud from accumulating on the shaft. What I really would like is a cap for my mid pto shaft. That is the one that always accumulates mud when I have my mmm off. I do not understand why Kubota doesn't provide one for the mid pto. Deere does, I believe.

Deere does have a cap for the mid PTO, at least on the 4200 to 4400. I don't have a cap for the rear PTO however. There is a hinged PTO guard that covers the sides and top of the rear PTO but no cap. I don't know if there is such a thing for the Deeres.

My old used Kubota had the PTO cap with it when I bought it. The cap was in the tool box under the seat and looked very good... the tractor did have a pump on the PTO at the time...

I would say that 98%, no much closer to 100% of the used tractors do not have a cap on them.... In fact of all the used tractors I have ever looked at I have never seen ONE with a cap. Never at a sell or a dealers used lot......

I purchased hitch pins from Farm & Fleet that included 10 inches of a light duty chain connect to the ring on the hitch pins. I then zip tied the free end of the chain nearby. No more lost hitch pins.
