I have a 2000 NH Boomer 35 hp and I cannot connect my mowing deck to the tractor. I also cannot connect the tiller to the tractor. the problem is that the shaft covers over the drive shaft is stuck and will not slide open or extend. any ideas?

Doesn't each attachment have its own PTO shaft? Are both shafts stuck? And by stuck, do you mean the plastic cover tubes won't telescope? Could it be the metal inside tubes that won't telescope?

you're right. each attachment has its own PTO shaft and maybe it is the metal inside that won't slide. any ideas on how to lubricate the metal?

you can take each pto shafts apart and clean them and put anti-seize on the inner shaft. make sure you time the shafts when you put them back together.

if they are now rusted stuck.. you may find this difficyult to do however.

remove them from the implement and chain thru the knuckles to a tree and have a comealong on the other side. if moderate pressure won't budge them.. then get a bucket of diesel and ret the end rest in it and then flip it.

oncew you get them apart, wate light sand paper to the inner one, wipe down, and then grease or neverseize. retime and go. ( offset the u joints end to end.. )

post back.

A picture can help at times:

Good.

In my limited experience I've noticed that the torque shafts are crudely pinned into the forged yokes near each end of the shaft.

Remove the PTO shaft connection from the tractor or attachment, depending on which end of the PTO shaft has the inner telescoping metal tube. Stand that end up as vertical as possible and squirt some penetrating oil down thru the upward yawning yoke so that the oil runs between the yoke and the outside of inner tube. Some of that oil might find its way down into the inner/outer tube interface and loosen the seizure up. Eventually, it may free itself, especially if you can reconnect it to the tractor or attachment without connecting the 3 point hitch, then gently drive forward until it frees itself or you realize it ain't going to work!

sounds like a great way to damage a pto shaft bearing carrier onthe tractor or an input shaft assy on the implement..

Thus the term "gently".

Some of the new PTO shafts are not square tubing. Under heavy load, or extended to far they will spin inside the mating shaft and be almost impossible to separate. If you can get the outer plastic shields off this will let you determine if they are held together by rust or torque spinning inside the mating shaft.
