Pto shaft falling off tractor?

I recently picked up a ww grinder used 3pt wood chipper for my tractor. when i hooked it up and ran it, the pto shaft falls off the tractor after about 5 mins. it doesn't seem to want to slide all the way down the pto's splines but because this is my first time using a pto attachment i dont know if that is all the way on or what is suppossed to hold it on. the shaft has the plastic cover over it and when i look inside the splined end, in the grooves of the splines there are balls like a rachet has to hold on a socket. any ideas as to what i am doing wrong?

Doug, it sounds as if you're not getting the PTO driveshaft slid far enough onto the tractor's PTO output shaft. If we had a picture of that PTO driveshaft, we could probably give you specific instructions, but there are several different types. If it has a spring loaded pin (3/8" or so in diameter - don't remember the exact size), you hold that pin in while you slide it on all the way, release the pin, pull back on it and those balls should snap into a groove on the PTO output shaft. Or if it has a collar on the driveshaft, it may the the type that you pull back (toward the implement or away from the tractor) and hold it while you slide it on, then release the collar. And some of them have a collar that you can twist and it will come back at the same time. When you get it on, then push and pull hard both directions to see if it's locked on.

If the PTO shaft has been stored outdoors the balls may need some lube to get them and ring moving freely. Twist on the ring that is on the outer diameter from the balls. I believe the ring needs to be rotated counter clockwise when trying to install the PTO but i'm not sure. Before tring to install on PTO output shaft turn the ring and make sure ball are all free to move.
As Bird said make sure the PTO shaft is pushed all the way on and cannot be pulled off shaft.

In some way, that outer heavy plastic ring is manuvered to make the balls retract. So as you push the pto coupler onto the tractor shaft, those 3 balls will seat into that groove on your tractor pto shaft.

The simplest are the little metal pin described above, but you don't have that. You have the big collar with the 3 balls - everybody going to those.

Either the collar pushes back, or turns to one side or the other, to allow those balls to retract. Then be sure to slide the pto on far enough until the balls lock onto the groove.

when i checked the collar it pulled back and i was able to slide it all the way on.

The PTO shaft on my JD 413 cutter is like that. I find it very difficult to pull back on the collar and push forward on the shaft at the same time. Mybe it's just me. I'd rather have a trist ring.

The only implement that I own that has that type of PTO lock is my snow blower. I actually like it better than the single pin that has to be pushed on the majority of connections. Just seems to me like it is easier to work with especially in the cold.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Just an additional word about safety. The tractor should be OFF when connecting or disconnecting the PTO.

There've been several times when I'm tempted to just "slide the PTO shaft on" without killing the tractor, but then I think of the many posts here about people getting wrapped around the PTO shaft. Not pretty...very sad.

Play it safe and pocket the key when connecting to the PTO.

My mower-conditioner had one of those push-ring pto locks on it, first one I really saw (other than the plastic cheapy on the sprayer pump...).

Hated it so much I took the whole knuckle apart & put a new single-pin 'normal' pto lock on the shaft for $25 or so. Much happier.
