PTO shaft won't catch

   / PTO shaft won't catch #11
So I figured I'd try again tonight for my sanity because this was driving me insane... I unhooked the mower from the lifter arms and rolled it forward so the PTO shaft wasn't connected to the mower to give me some room to hit it with a rubber mallet... I was pulling on it trying to get it off and whacking at it with the mallet and before I knew it some how the mallet got it to slide onto and lock into place on the PTO of the tractor... Don't ask me how when I was trying to pull it off it slid on... Either way, I then had to do the one thing I didn't want to do and try to reconnect the PTO shafts (they have a key way) but with a little help from the wife rolling the mower deck back and me trying to get the shafts together... DONE!

Perhaps you first managed to push it on past the "notch" that it locks into and when you tried to pull it off it hit the "notch" and locked into place?

Well... I wish my tractor was new ... It's a 2004 but I will continue to clean and lube before and after storage for both the mower and the snowblower. Thanks everyone!!!

I thought that too but I kept constant eye on how far it was on and it was about 1/4" or so shy before I started hitting it. I don't care just glad it's done :)

This may sound a little odd to some, but when I was able to do this sort of thing, I backed my tractor onto stands and came in from the back as I could get a better grip and more leverage pulling than pushing from the contorted angle from the side.

This was going to be my tactic if I were able to get it off - luckily I got it on. I plan to back it onto a couple 2x6s to give it some height when trying again next year. And I plan to get the shaft locked in first then connect the mower since that was far easier this time around...
