PTO SHAFT

I've got one particular pto shaft that's quite long. (on a hay elevator) grease doesn't seem to travel from the area where the zerk fitting is located. It requires seperating and manually greasing. Regular grease does "ok", but I've taken to using wheel bearing grease. It seems to stay on the job just a bit longer.

The 3 lobe shafts I have will only go together in one orientation. It appears that the angular relation of the ridges is unequal. Any one else noticed this?

I think if you look closely, you'll see one of the corners has a flat and the other two corners are radiused.

I just put together my first shaft today for a rotary cutter:
- first try, no grease: ugh, must be doing something wrong,
- second try, a dab of grease about 1-2 inches up both shafts (inside the large, outside the small) : get in about 5 inch, then stuck.
- third try, applied grease all the way down (about 12+ inches) with a long skinny stick - niclely spread thick: slides all the way in - no problem.

I guess the grease has to be applied as far as the expected overlap of the shaft pairs. I used that green bicycle grease.

i have 2 new pto's that I am going to get the "joy" of doing this to soon....

I have 2 old pto's that i dont know if they have a shear bolt and will get to verify it was done properly. the 478 mower/conditioner has about a 9' pto shaft. I havent pulled it appart to see how big the connection is but it looked like a square shaft that may go a good section or all the length of the main run about 6' i think

any suggestions on old equip and adding a safty device for the pto? or am i just blind? (looking through the parts) it has a clutch plate? im wondering if this is a safty device. ug will have to see if I can get a couple manuals soon :/ hopefully i beat the first snow
