I was using my bush hog last weekend and a chunk of "something" (perhaps a branch but I don't really know) ended up laying against the plastic PTO shaft cover - just enough to wear through the plastic in about 20 minutes and located just where I didn't notice it before it was too late. Has anyone tried to repair the plastic outer cover of a PTO shield? I used the hanyman's friend - duct tape - but that only lasted a couple of minutes. Nothing is jamming and the PTO works fine but I am concerned about the safety aspect. Do I just suck it up and buy a new shield or can something like this be fixed.

The PTO safety shields are fairly inexpensive... $35-40... but why is the shield rotating... to wear a groove into the plastic...? That's what the chains are for... you want the shields stationary around the "inside moving drive shaft"...

If you can, take a picture and post so we can see exactly where the problem is... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Was the shield rotating, or was it pressed against the shaft in that area and wore a hole through?

As pointed out, shields arent that expensive, however if money doesn't permit, a patch with some stiff plastic sheeting looks possible, and is better than nothing. You have any fiberglass on hand? I doubt you will find a glue/solvent that will react properly with the patch and shield material ( if your real lucky, it may be a vinyl product ), but a contact adhesive will probably do the trick.

Remember, the shield shouldn't rotate, jus tthe shaft.
