Is your PTO select lever hard to shift? Mine is very difficult to move between settings. I have to keep engaging the PTO while moving the Select lever or it wont shift at all. When I do that I can hear the grears grind. Doesn't seem right to me.

Is there any trick to this? Do you think there is something wrong with my linkage or adjustments?

John,

Mine did the same till about 90-100 hours on the tractor, plus a entire winter of snow blowing with the 3 pt snowblower, it is now very easy to move, no grinding, works great. Give it time to wear in and it will be ok, /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

the PTO lever on my 2200 was very hard to shift because of the plastic stops molded into the indicator panel on the tractor. Seems as if there was a middle detent position that served no purpose. I am as committed to safety as anyone else but after a few frustrating hours of using the mmm I filed down the little plastic stops. The lever moves very smoothly and there is no noise now.
There should be no gear noise as the hydraulic system does the shifting. Are you engaging the pto at slow speeds? Maybe it is the mower or 3pth attachment.....

Those stops ended up tearing the plastic off the lever on my BX.. I keep thinking of filing them down or cutting them off... interesting that I'm not alone in that thought.

Mine is still tough to shift at 150 hours, a little gear grinding is usually in order.

Try a little spray lube, like WD40 on the linkage on the side of the trans. Mine was balky and after spraying it is as smooth as silk.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will try all of them, one at a time, starting with the lube. The lube sounds like the easiest fix and I have lots of WD40 and spray white lithium grease.

I will let you know how I make out.

I had a problem with the hst range selector being balky after I washed the bx. Finally sprayed super lube on the linkage (tough to get a can in there) and voila!, everything is smooth again.

The lube did the trick!

I could only find one place to squirt WD40 for the PTO selector. It looks like there may be some paint in the pivot joint. Sure works a lot smoother now. I lubed the other linkages while I was at it. They all work better now.

All.... Thanks for the info.

My 4WD shifter is much harder to shift then I think it should be. Has been since new. You have to really work at it to shift it in and out. No grinding, and it works fine, just hard to shift. Are they all like that or should I look for a problem? The lever seems to move smoothly enough. It is the in-to or out-of part that is difficult.

David:
The manual kind of makes reference to the balky 4wd engagement when they say that if you can't engage the lever then step briefly on the hst pedal and then try the lever again.

I have found that both the 4wd and the low/high range levers are a bit balky and that by tapping the hst pedal and allowing it to return to nuetral they then will go into the proper engagement.

Guess it is the nature of the beast
