My tractor has a 2 speed pto......I was thinking about 1:1.5 ratio. Just curious about the horsepower to cutting wheel diameter....any ideas?

You'll notice the picture of the one on the backhoe is hydraulicly powered. Makes things like alignment of gears or belts unnecessary. Your pto will power a pretty good size pump. If you hang the grinder on the end of a boom, the boom can be the reservoir.

I did a quick Google search for "stump grinder rpm" and came up with speeds ranging from 200 to 2000 rpm.Nothing beats a ball park figure, huh??

The hyd backhoe grinder is awsome but I have no backhoe. I have hyd on my tractor already but choose pto because I have no rear outlet kit installed on my tractor. Not looking to make a living grinding stumps but I have a few and so do a few friends. No trees bigger than 18"-24"

I think what slamfire was reffering to the hydraulic powered machine was to use a seperate pump thats geared up like the county uses on their boom moweres. You tractors pump couldnt supply the gpms to run a cutter like that. one thing on the RPM of a cutter its like a saw blade the more teeth per inch and the finer pitch you can go fasts. The less teeth per inch or course pitch you go slower. it keeps the jarring and shaking down.

Hi
here is one made for a backhoe I don't remember who made it or where i got the pic. but I think it was on this forum. maybe someone else will remember when they see it.

Charlie.

HI,new member here.I have a small pull behind backhoe that I was thinking about doing the same thing to.Does anyone know what the psi and gpm requirements would be on my backhoe? And what size hydraulic motor would I need?

That is a tough question, not knowing the engine and hydraulic pump size on your tow behind. Judging by the size engine I have seen on most tow behinds, you are not going to have a surplus of flow to power a motor of any real size.

Another option for a backhoe mounted unit, might be a cutter head driven from a small gas engine. The whole engine and cutter would replace the bucket on the hoe. You would have to keep the cutter mostly level, but that shouldn't be a problem as the bucket axis would be used to keep things level. The hoe would provide the positioning and movement.

Those bolt on cutter teeth are pretty expensive. One option I was thinking about was machned bolt heads with a carbide cutter tooth brazed onto the modified head. This might be something fairly easilly and inexpensively fabricated. If you were not doing production work, hardened steel bolt head teeth might work OK.

thanks for the reply, ronmnar. My hoe has an old 6-1/4 horse Kolher engine, and the hoses are only 1/4" ID so you;re probably right about not having enough flow.I like the idea of the gas engine, have even contemplated an electric motor, but not very practical having to string a cord along.I am going to check at work and see if I can find some worn 1/2" carbide lathe bits that might be thrown away, and use them.(I work at a machine shop)I came across and old iron pulley that looks like it might have come off a bucksaw or similar that could be used for the cutting wheel.

Jake123,

Since you are probably in the range of a small grinder, have you looked at the cutter heads on the small walk behind units.

There is a hub assembly with I believe 4-90 degree pie shape segments that bolt onto each side of the hub. I don't know the exact cost, but it might be worth looking into.

A big plus is the ease of replacement.

One manufacturer is US Praxis. Bailey's is a distributor for them.

I have been wanting to build a stump grinder, but I will most likely purchase the cutter wheel and carbides.

I considered the Praxis assemblies; however, I want to build a unit with more capacity. It will be a trailer type unit in the 25-30 hp range.

Is this the one your're talking about?I can easily make the plate to mount it on.Apparently,i would need 2 of them.$95.00 a piece -what is the diameter on this one?are the teeth offset and how much?

Our aggressive stump grinding blade provides the perfect power-to-weight ratio and eliminates clutch burn-out. The 12 tooth tungsten carbide blade is fast, non-adjusting and economical to replace. Our patented stump grinding blade eliminates the expense of replacing whole blades. Replace only the segments necessary. 3/8" blade for 5hp, 9hp & 13hp Stump Machines.
