Thanks for the advice Indy....had a few dry days and went out and cut about 20 stumps...you were very right. Chains stayed sharp and it went pretty quick. Look so much better too. Thanks again, Scott

I've to a Kioti CK30 with BH. Have about 70 stumps in the 12-24" size...I keep thinking (around southern Oregon guys get like $50 a stump to grind them) that if I just dug a circle around them about 12" deep and then just cut the stumps(got lots of old chains from my saws) that would be easy and cost effective. These are trees I cleared to open a view from the house, and I don't plan on doing anything other than level, seed and keep it down with a brush hog. What say you experts(implying I am new to all this so every day is a learning experience).

I get those size stumps out with a BH mounted ripper tooth. My BH is bigger (Woods BH90x) but the ripper should work on a 7 or 8 ft BH too. Just rip the lateral roots and then tip the stump over to hank it out. There are a few threads on use of rippers here for more detail. Michigan Iron and Equipment fabricated mine and the design could easily be scaled for a smaller BH.

I used to grind stumps but much prefer ripping. Much less work than digging them out with a BH bucket and has a much smaller impact on surrounding turf.
