Keep in mind what your pto gen was made for.. if it is a 540 unit.. you will want to be pretty much dead on.. regulation of voltage and frequency on those pto gensets is a very narrow 'acceptable' band.

Yeah, the whole 60Hz thing is pretty important as I remember from my days of spec'ing out gensets and battery backups for datacom equipment. I was thinking I could use the tranny to "tune" the tractor to the load w/o having to run it at 1800 RPM all the time.

Just keep the engine in a power band. otherwise when the load gets high.. the engine will bog down too much.
