Yanmar 1500D PTO won't go into neutral - any ideas on cause and cure?

runs to bushhog fine and has overrun clutch but still a problem since it keeps spinning.

I would guess shifting fork area but I think you will have to pull your pto cover to find out for sure.

What do you mean by won't go "into" neutral? Will it go past neutral into 2nd or 3rd gear?

Hello Dreece1952 and welcome to TBN,
are you new to the use of this tractor? does it have 2-or 3 speed PTO,
are you able to change between pto speeds either High or low?
My 1700 has 3 speed PTO and sometimes I find it difficult finding neutral between 1st & 2nd speeds, I'll usually overshoot 2 or 3 times before finding it, and I use the PTO all the time ;) Takes some getting used to finding the right location,
to answer your question will it damage to keep using? you are of course talking about using the tractor with no PTO driven implement, Right!
If it does happen to be locked in then there is certainly a problem and should be addressed, But occasional use of the tractor should not be a problem until you can get it repaired , just be aware that the PTO shaft will be spinning always and could cause potential hazard to anyone might come up to the rear of the tractor while its running,

we've had the tractor about 10 years, it has a 2 speed PTO that does allow changing between the speeds and we're running the bushhog. Normnally when getting off to open gates etc we would put PTO in neutral and let it stop first.

So, are you saying it will still go into 2nd gear, but there is no neutral in between?

Something similar happened recently to my YM186d (US version somewhat similar to yours)

With the engine shut off, remove any attachment from the PTO shaft. Then grab the splined output shaft itself and try to push/pull it forward and backward or from side to side with your hands. If you can move the shaft in and out abnormally, a retaining ring may have detached from the forward bearing inside the PTO itself.

this thread shows the problem i had:
TractorByNet.com - Compact Tractor Forum ... e-off.html

In my case, failure of the retaining ring allowed movement of the shaft inward, apparently made it impossible to disengage the PTO (couldn't get a neutral position).

Hope it helps..

By the way, i would NOT recommend running the PTO in this condition. Mine had no significant damage other than loss of the ring, but continuing to run it that way could possibly have caused MAJOR damage, if the gears are out of position internally and can contact any other internal gears or surfaces improperly.

Can't get enough info to know if handle is frozen in housing or there is an internal problem.
