I just bought a 1975 Ford 2000 diesel and was pretty happy with it until I tried out the rotary mower. It acts like an old 8N does when you try to stop, it just keeps pushing you forward with the clutch pressed down. What kind of problem do I have and will it be expensive to repair? It had a clutch and pressure plate installed about a year ago.

Suggest you post the question in the Ford, New Holland board and will get more hits and answers.

However, you need an over-running clutch on the PTO. I had the same problem with my older JD as well as my TO-30 Ferguson.
The direct linkage of the PTO works both ways through the tranny. That is what you are experiencing. Some newer tractors have the over-running clutch built in, but the Ford 2000 doesn't.

A search on over running clutch should give you some additional reading material. They allow the rotary cutter to keep running when the tractor tranny stops. Will then stop pushing the tractor, but nothing to stop the cutter unless you drop it to the ground or into something to cut.

If your 2000 has the 4spd, it is non live pto. Most of the 6 speeds were non live as well, the 8spd would be a dual clutch and live pto.

As the others sugested.. get an ORC, and then the mower inertia won't push you.

That's still a very capable tractor light years ahead of an N.. it should serve you well.

welcome,

Do you know if you have live or transmission driven pto? from your explanation it appears you have a single clutch and transmission pto. If my statement is correct then you do not have any problems and pto is running like it should. you need to invest on a ORC (over running clutch) around $60 from TSC to be installed on the PTO output shaft. If you have double clutch then your PTO clutch is stuck. I don't know if that vintage had independent hydraulically activated clutch and you problem has different issue. I doubt if yo have that.

10spd powershift sos tranny would have had an independent pto.. 8spd twin stick would be dual clutch, 6 spd twin stick could be either.. though more common is non live.. 4 spd is non live..

Thanks for the advice. I bought the over riding clutch and installed it so everything works good now.
