i think it's odd using a gr8 bolt as a shear bolt.

Good Afternoon Chris,
Agreed, that sounded strange also... my only suggestion is to idle the tractor down as much as possible. I gather its not a slip it in gradually type of setup... like I have

I looked at mahindras many years back and they had some sort of electric solenoid engaged pto.. it was an all or nothing deal and I passed ont hem for that reason.. looks like they may have progressed a lil bit.. but how much?

I agree. Using G8 shear bolts have caused many ill-timed and required repairs in the past.

The older "big" ones were never solenoid..it was an independent lever on left side which activated the PTO clutch...my 6000 also came with 540 and 1000rpm pto....looks like they may have re-gressed instead....BobG in VA

i distinctly remember having a brochure in my hand .. model was something like a 2550 or something liek that.. and it mentioned solenoid engauge.. mind you.. this was back in the 90's not recently. I also looked at a unti that had a 4000 sounding number.. 4500 or ? ? been too long for me to remmeber. these struck me as being about '30hp' sized machines.

If I recall posts correctly, there are other brands with electrically actuated PTOs. I recall this because some TBNers were concerned about the sudden shock to their tractor's PTOs...again, IIRC, some were engaging the PTO at higher RPM. Or, am I losing my mind?
Anyway, can't recall too many (if any) breaking shear pins when engaging.

Don't engage the pto with the engine at max rpm. Keep the engine rpm as low as possible (preferably low idle) when you engage the pto. A grade 8 shear bolt is asking for trouble. Check your owners manual and make sure that you should be using a grade 8 bolt. They are normally a grade 2 bolt.
