Have any idea what may have happened ?

The governor came in yesterday. what might have happened, that bronze bushing in the housing wore away, causing some slop and that weight assembly to go berserk. or lack of oil, combo of both, not sure. Lets see how this one lasts. lol

I think I like this weight assembly better, everything is forged, not stamped like the other one was.

Oh, and the radiator is done! I had a local shop rod out, hot tank, and braze the pinholes, & straighten up the inlet/outlets.

Just read through the whole thread. Nice job on the restoration. Those old Olivers are great tractors. My college roommate still farms with a 550. He and his father bought it over 40 years ago. I think she has around 7000 hours now. They are great units.

Great deal on those 4 rib. You can find deals on Ebay if you are patient and you jump. I got a set of rears for my Ford shipped. Bought 2 for the price of one.

Just curious. Are you going to parade her or use her? I would be tempted to do both.

Those would be 3 rib in the ebay link.

I'm going to use it! I'm gonna pull an old disc and clean up the field in front of my house, after I burn all the brush ive stacked in the field this year.

it wont be pretty enough for a parade, I'm not painting much anything else, just the things I remove and replace. :) I'd like to take it down some more, but for now I just want to get it up and running again! I don't even know if the hydraulics work, if there is problems or not...I doubt it, but ya never know! I do want a correct front grill, but for $290, I can put that into something else it may need.

Tractors are a hit in parades and shows locally. I like the running versions in their native skin. Looking forward to seeing action pics of this tractor.

Thanks for saving it rather than calling the scrap iron guy. Hard to imagine how many tractors in this condition have went to the crusher...... :(

Kinda surprised you can get a new grill yet. Honestly I didn't know the one that's on it wasn't original. :ashamed:

Took a little bit but I got some more done. Crank seal, timing cover, crank pulley and governor installed today. Tomorrow I'll pull the oil pickup screen off and clean it up, then install the oil pan.

Small progress, but I hope to fire it up soon. If only I can find the correct dang water pump, sure would be nice.

Nice job on this restore! I'll add my two cents for Rustoleum self etching primer. It may have been designed for aluminum(?) but it works wonderfully on steel or iron. As long as most of the rust is taken off, it seems to work fine; I never had to make it perfectly shiny underneath.
Even nicer, it dries very quickly and you can top coat same day.
