pulling- draw bar or hitch

This link will take you to SpeeCo. They make linkage parts for hitches. The chart at this link shows the hitch values with respect to tractor horsepower. That doesn't answer the question, but it does provide some idea of the capacity of 3 pt hitches.

but a big downside is that the 3pt drawbar can "float" upward as you start up a hill

This is true unless you take the extra effor to chain (or otherwise fasten) the 3pt drawbar down to generally the fixed drawbar. Then the whole setup is pretty rigid.

Very true, Kevin, excellent point. Then you get the best of both worlds, as long as you chain it as low as, or lower than, the fixed draw bar.

i use a 7500hsd 90% of the time pulling trailers with the 3-point drawbar. the area that we use it in is flat. we always drop the drawbar all the way down and make shure that there is tongue weight.

I,ve only got a b7100 but I use the three point hitch exclusively for pulling. Easier to hitch up a trailer. You can put some load on the rear tires by hooking chains short and lifting for more traction but also make sure the bucket has weight in it when doing this. It's amasing the size of rocks or trees that can be hauled in this manner by the little tractor.

The only thing I use my 3-point drawbar for is to pull trailers. By having the hitch ball farther back it lets me turn sharper, and with the 3-point, I can back up to trailer and raise the ball into the hitch without messing with raising and lowering those front hitch jacks. But of course, I don't have much of a load on the trailers and make sure I have some tongue weight. If I'm going to pull a heavy trailer, then I put a ball on the swinging drawbar.

As I recall, the first year I had my 2500b I borrowed someone's sicle mower and attached it to the swinging drawbar. I now recall that I could not make sharp turns as the mower would hit the tires. I remember moving it to a 3pt draw bar and having to lenghten the drive shaft. I think I bought one at a tractor salvage yard for $20.00 and cut it to fit. Thanks for the recall.

The B7100 is a great tractor/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Quite a few people in here have them or had them in the past.
I always use the 3ph drawbar, got a couple different sized balls, a clevis, and a chain hook on mine.

HR_Mutt:
Mine has a home built toolbar on it with a chain hook, trailer ball and lots of holes for whatever. The chain hook is mounted high so I can get some lift when moving rocks or trees.

Somebody on the board posted a link to this last summer

http://www.badriverinc.com/prod02.htm

and I bought one a few weeks ago. One of the things that
impressed me was that they designed in the chain restraint
to prevent the hitch from floating up. I am thinking of
trying to come up with a similar restraint for a concrete
weight box.

BTW the Bad River hitch is really well done...much better
than anything I could have welded up myself.
