Pulling Power of a JD4100???

Dan,
I have used the FEL to pull fence posts but have not tried the 3pt. Does the 3pt work better that the FEL? I think it will be safer because I have had one of the rear wheels come off the ground while using the FEL to pull posts.

Really, if you need to remove stumps and root balls, the best way to do this is to cut the trees with a chainsaw, then use your 4100 to skid and remove the wood. Leave 2 foot of stump above ground when cutting. Then have a D-6/7 spend half a day popping the stumps out of the ground and piling the really huge root balls. Then use your 4100 to skid and pile the stumps using blade, chain, loader, whatever you have ect... Then use a boxblade and rake to smooth and level the ground. This way you can get alot of work done with your trusty 4100 and your own sweat, but not damage your equipment or kill yourself trying to do things a small tractor is not meant to do. A D-6/7 with operator is somewhat costly on a per hour basis, BUT they can do so much work quickly popping stumps that you won't need them for very many hours.

Get the D6! That's what I've used. Of course the stumps were 20"- 30" white pines. Now seriously, Twinkle Toes whats the scoop on rotting stumps with fertilizer?

I'm not sure which is better at pulling fence posts, a FEL or a chain on a 3PH. When I was pulling the posts we only had the 3PH so I had no point of comparison. The 4700 3PH lifts 2500 pounds while the 460 FEL lifts 2,325 pounds with a 3,863 pound break out force. I would not swear that I have pulled the back end off the ground while pulling some pine stumps out of the ground but if I have not I sure have come close!

The problem with using the 3PH is that you have to have two people, one on the tractor and one wraping the posts. I suppose that is true with a FEL as well. With a 4n1 bucket one person can do the job. I have been able to grab stumps with only an inch or so of wood above grade with the FEL and pulled them out.

I would use a 4n1 FEL to pull posts over the 3PH just because I work alone and if I was pulling the back of the tractor off the ground its time to stop any way and use the backhoe. I guess if the back of the tractor is trying to fly that means the stump/post is winning that contest anyway

Can you nudge the posts forward and backward a bit before trying to pull them? That might help.

Later.....
