JD 4100 HST
I just purchased a used 1999 JD 4100 HST, 400-some hours, Turfs, 60" Mid-Mower, 54" Front Blade, and 51" Broom: $11,150 + Tax.

For comparison to a new machine, www.4turf.com (which is actually a dealer in MN near me) shows these prices on their web site:

List price, new:
14,605 tractor (includes a $600 rebate)
2,429 60" mower
2,764 51" broom
955 54" blade
-------
$20,753

"Sale" price, new
12,499 tractor (includes the rebate)
2,199 60" mower
2,599 51" broom
955? 54" blade ("sale" price not listed)
-------
$18,252

The machine is clearly a "used" tractor with some scratches and dents here and there and missing paint on the front of the blade and mower deck as expected with normal use.

My main concern with the unit is that it appears that the previous owner ran it in 4WD 100% of the time on hard ground or pavement. The front tires are disproportionately worn and the ball joint on the end of the power steering cylinder is worn (apparently the previous owner didn't know about grease fittings, either). Considering the wear on the tires, I am a little concerned that the front axle may have some internal wear / damage, but it seems to work fine for now. Hopefully with a bit more tender care (like some grease, an oil change, disengaging 4wd on dry pavement) it will last me for many years.

Even if the front axel ends up needing some new parts, I consider myself happy with the price.

I was very happy with the sales process considering the machine came from a dealer in another state. Greg Pearson at Holland's West in Princeton IL made the buying process work remotely, including staying late Saturday afternoon when we drove down from MN to pick it up.

The attached photo is what I saw before I made the commitment to drive down and hopefully buy the machine. When we arrived, the machine was all shiny and cleaned up (not dirty as shown in the photo) and had new oil, filters and lube. Also, the mower gaurds were all in place, and the ROPs had been re-installed. They also had found all the user and installation manuals to go with the machine.

They also helped me load everything onto my truck and trailer.

To top it off, they added a "choice" of a toy from the showroom for my wife.

Considering that I am an out-of-state customer, their level of courtesy, flexibility, and assistance greatly exceeded my expectations.

I am taking delivery of a new snow blower for this machine from a local dealer next week. Hopefully they will provide as good as service as Holland's did!

So where is the ROPS? It is standard equipment on a 4100.

If you feel good about the purchase and the JD&attachments are in good shape than you done your home work...that what counts.
Do you plan on purchasing a FEL?

Jack,

That was one of my questions on the phone when I saw the photo. The dealer said they had it along with the gaurds for the mower. They indicated that for liability reasons it would indeed have to be installed when I took delivery.

I was actually impressed at how much they cleaned the machine up and had the ROPs and the gaurds installed on such short notice.

The good news is that it fits in my garage with the ROPS on!

Thomas,

No FEL plans yet. I am still working on the budget committee.

However, we are planning to build a house soon and I would imagine that will include a lot of landscaping work which I know always involves moving a lot of dirt and other heavy materials around - a FEL would come in very handy.

I just got a new 4100 this month and I am going to try and store it on my trailer in my garage, so getting it in with the ROPS on willl be interesting. If the trailer was not in there, I could get in there easy. But with the trailer and the elevation to get on top of it, Well, I will see.
