Purchasing a ranch that includes a John Deere 4240 - Never owned a tractor before

Cool! How exciting. I don't know about too big or keep it but sounds like time is on your side so do the research on operating it... take it very slow... and enjoy it. If you have flat ground and it can get into all the places you want it to... and it runs great... and the implements are what you will be using... then great. Otherwise, parlay it into the size tractor and implements you really need.

OK Gary, where is Oakalla? Texas is big and we've been here for many generations, but there are still some places that I don't know.

I'd never heard of Oakalla, Texas so I googled it. I see your ranch is right down the road from Ding Dong,Tx. IMHO 4240's are some of JD's best tractors. I owned one for several years before I bought my 4255 which I owned since '93

Gentlemen, Sorry for the slow response, I've been busy with year end business. Oakalla, Texas is located about 15 miles southwest of Copperas Cove and about the same distance southeast of Lampassas. It sits about 50 miles due north of my home in Austin.

Quick Update: We closed on the place Friday. The original owners leased it back for a week and we take possession the Friday after Christmas. I'll try to remember to take some pictures

I have acreage between briggs and florence and live near Joppa, I have an old 4430 we can go over some operation if you need. I do some Oat haying and few cows on the briggs ~190 acres. Lets get together if you want and share experiences I am always willing to learn too.

That is a great tractor and good size for a lot of things - loader, haying, small acreage tillage, and just about anything else. Growing up on the farm we had a 4230 for a loader tractor and it was fantastic. The only problem is that we used it too much and wore it out too quickly!
