Put a Turbo on a B2630 good or bad

Something else to keep in mind - depending on your mechanics skill, you'll have to do without the tractor from when you start tearing into it until you're done; if you trade up, my guess is you'll be without a tractor for less time.

Some people like to think about resale value as well, though many others say they'll never trade/sell their current tractor.

I like turbos in general, but a home turbo job on any machinery would be a deal-killer for me if I was buying, too much to get wrong on that - keep that in mind as a "cost" (reduced resale value) when weighing a trade-up vs doing the turbo.

Here is a guy that added a turbo on his Kubota ZD326 with a 26 hp engine as well. Although it's a D1005 versus the D1105 on the B2630.

I've thought about doing it on my homemade backhoe with the D640 engine as well, just haven't got around to do it yet.

That dude is "rolling coal" in his turbo'd ZD326, lol

It appears he needs to do some extra 'tuning'!

Yeah, I believe he says in the comments that we will add a EGT gauge. He as a couple more videos of the installation and some testing.

He also turbocharged a Kubota B2100 some time before the mower and he actually ran it on the dyno.

Wheels are loaded. I definitely need chains. My property go up on the rear third. If we get some significant snow I cannot get up the hill. Or pull logs for firewood.
Are you located at high altitude? A non-turbo diesel at high altitude can be a real drag and buying a bigger and heavier unit doesn't really help.

I'm not a Kubota diesel expert, but this same discussion came up on the Mercedes diesel discussion boards from time to time. I drove a 1984 5 cylinder turbo diesel as my DD for 9 years and there were NO negatives to having a turbo on that engine.

However it was engineered to have a turbo from the ground up. MB added sodium filled exhaust valves, harder valve seats, and oil squirters that aimed at the crankcase side of the pistons. They also had a recalibrated injection pump that had a device that sensed boost, then added fuel as needed.

mind you they used a turbo that can go to 15 psi but they kept it at 9 psi.

You will be on the hook for extra fuel, a new oiling path to lubricate the turbo bearing, an oil return line, sufficient oil pump volume to handle the turbo, extra oil cooling capacity, and a way to monitor EGT as you proceed with the build so you won't melt your head. If you are willing to take that kind of risk, fine..but this experiment may well harm your resale value as some have already said.

Brings up an old story....

When I worked at TRW in Cleveland, Daimler sent us a microscopic wire that they claimed was the smallest the world had ever seen.

We drilled a hole through it, long-ways, and sent it back with a note that said, "Very nice."

Germans have no sense of humor

Now, this is a post that will make you think.... moving from naturally asperated to turbo.
This came up when The Fred did the conversion on his Kubota (I hate/still hate my tractor)

I Still Hate My Tractor II

going from memory here and iirc

kubota built a Turbo and non turbo version of the engine- one of the differences was the pistons and whether the pistons were manufactured with the added support of a steel ring land insert or just a cast or forged single metal Aluminum.
His non turbo engine was manufactured with the non insert style, and after using the engine "for a while" with the added turbo it lost power and a tear down revealed the piston ring lands were damaged/deformed from the boost. Fred did source some of the insert style Quality OEM Kubota Turbo pistons after some less expensive versions failed quickly and last I read the Kubota was running good with boost and more power.

It is interesting that some diesel engines come with the stronger pistons even when not spec'd for a factory Turbo. My Ford 3000 diesel engine had the inserts and maybe that explains why Ford had an option for starting fluid injection for starting on cold days.

Not sure about adding a turbo to an existing NA engine but I bought a BX2350 with a blown D902 and swapped in a D1105-T from a Toro 5500D mower (all I could find at the time)
In my case I had to buy some parts from the BX2660 (D1005 engine) to make it fit but since the B2630 already has a D1105 it would be a straight drop in for you.

Gee,the B2630 ,a premium "B" model. is a very nice tractor for it's era.
3 cylinder engine without the vibration issues of some 4 cylinder models.
Strong hydraulics.

What a shame to deface a sweet, iconic model!
