Put the 640 to work

We finally got some snow here in Indiana, about 8 inches last night. Went out this morning and fired up my 55 Ford 640. I did have to put a battery charger on it, the 6 volt system isn't up to it when it gets about 10 degrees or below. Once it fired, it ran like a champ. I hooked up the back blade and cleared off my 900 foot lane, reversed the blade and made a four sided fort for the boys. I decided I wasn't done yet, so I cleared about 1/4 mile of our road too, we'll never see a snow plow out here! The tractor never slipped a wheel the whole time, I do have weights on the rear wheels. I don't know why doing that was so much fun, but it was. Now i need some more snow!

Nice.. I have an older brother of your 640.. a 1954 NAA. I was out this morning putting down some rye grass seed in my pasture.

Had to file the points to get it to start, but otherwise ran great.

I have to sand my points, then wipe them off with a cloth and electrical cleaner, if I let my tractor sit for a few weeks without being ran. Once started though, it runs great.

I wonder if the points are getting fouled with blow-by coming up past a worn distributor shaft?

On rare occasion I've seen oil fouled points on a front mount. And on not so rare occasions, a drip from an overfull radiator will find the distribuitor as well, on the front mounts. Side mounbts seem pretty bullit proff except for driving rain.

On a similar note.. I just picked up a ford 660 with 1-arm loader.. Can't wait to play with it!

Soundguy, I would really like to see pictures of the tractor and one arm loader assembly. I don't recall ever seeing anything like it before.

This is not my tractor, but it is the same style loader I have. I'll post some pics of mine when i get them.

The oil blowby was not so rare on both our 960s. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif If you really use them, those distributor shafts make a lot of revolutions......

Your 660 looks nice, I saw on the NH forum.

I'm sure there is some blow by getting by the shaft! When under hard use, such as running the brush hog, I get some smoke out of the crank case vent. I haven't worried much about it yet, it doesn't seem to lack for power and it uses no oil. One of these days I'll rebuild the engine and restore the tractor while I'm at it. Right now, I'm too busy using it to tear it down.
