puttin grease in steeringbox

i got around to replacing the oil out of my steering box with cornhead grease today. it was a bigger job than i thought. getting the oil out was the hard part. had to remove the air oilbath thingy, and batterybox, i needed 3 hand but got it done with 2. once i got it out of the way i took the 4 bolt out where you adjust the steering shaft, not sure how you adjust it or what it adjusts(check pics) but thats the only place you can get most of the oil out. it really makes a mess. i got it all drained out, put back together and pumped nearly 2 tubes of grease in til it was coming out the top somewhere(check pics) so i guess its full. i guess i'm pretty much done with this one unless i run across a power steering set up for it, but other than that its done for now.

on the side plate .. the one that does not have the sector arm, there is an adjuster stud and nut.. you loosen the nut then turn the stud to adjust sector backlash to worm gear.

on the bottom of the box, there is a thrust bearing adjustment.

you really didn't need to take it all apart to do that.. could just pump the grease in and it will displace the oil.. but as long as you get it back togeher.. you didn't hurt anything.

then rowcrop boxes are MUCH different than the ag boxes.

ps.. make sure you service the front steering pedistal too.

now ya tell me lol, i just took th bottom plate off and nothing fell out except nasty sticky oil. i pumped it in til it came out somewhere behind the sheet metal much higher up. theres still a lil bit of oil oozing out now and then but it should stop later on. everthings good now.

Nice video find. Looks like I need to switch to this stuff instead of my homebrew mixtures of gear oil and reg #2 grease. With homebrew mixtures you run the risk of mixing in a grease thickener agent that is not compatible with oil. Having a grease gun dedicated to this stuff would totally eliminate any risk of incompatible mixtures.
