It's called 'whipping' the ends.I wrapped them with tape but that didn't last long. I suppose I could bind the end (think there is actually a term for this)...

I have tinned copper strand wires before and have brazed galvanized conduit - I would assume you could easily braze the galvanized wire ends.
If you attempt this - just remember when you apply high heat (braze / weld) galvanized metal - it produces toxic fumes. Really need a respirator or do it outside upwind.
Learning to splice would probably be the best method.
