I wrapped them with tape but that didn't last long. I suppose I could bind the end (think there is actually a term for this)...
It's called 'whipping' the ends.

I have tinned copper strand wires before and have brazed galvanized conduit - I would assume you could easily braze the galvanized wire ends.

If you attempt this - just remember when you apply high heat (braze / weld) galvanized metal - it produces toxic fumes. Really need a respirator or do it outside upwind.

Learning to splice would probably be the best method.

I'd go with splicing if I had the cable, the time, and a good pair of gloves & safety glasses. Not sure if there's a back splice for cable, but that would finish the free end. I've done plenty of splices in 3 strand rope and a few in double weave synthetics. You get a very strong and reliable joining.
