Junkman,
When I rented the splitter they were aghast that I spent $500 on the grappleload. Told me to look in the phonebook under loggers and I should get it much cheaper. Similar to what you describe.
We get a lot of fire wood from freinds/neighbors who have trees taken down but don't want to pay for removal. The funny thing is that the landscaper/tree service that charges you a removal fee is usually selling firewood in the fall.

Pete:

You got it right. Cut fire wood when the trees are dormant. Less sap in the tree and it will dry quicker.

And oh-- wait till it's 40 below to split.

I'm not much of a safety nut, but I would caution you against using the chainsaw on logs that are in the pile. Too much chance of shifting movement etc. in the pile.

But, the setup with the timberjack, hat, mask, and gloves is good.

You have a very interesting looking place. That is a very large log cabin. Do you have any more detailed pictures of it you could post?

We had planned to vacation up in the New England area this fall. We have never been farther than Washington DC that direction. My wife’s boss informed her that a couple of months ago she had overlooked the fact that another nurse was already signed up for the weeks I’m off and she can’t have them both off at the same time, so……. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

55F huh? I’m afraid I would have to chip icicles off my wife. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I like it what I call cold in the house in the winter, that’s more like 66F.

Oh yeah, 55F is what the thermostat is set at. We use the wood stoves to bring it up to a more suitable temp. No need to chip ice of of anything inside the house.

Thanks for your interest in the place. It is unique but we love it.

Neilly2, we try to be as safe as possible. My wife was cutting the ends of logs off that protruded over the pile.

At one point I did have to cut while on the pile. The pile was wedged tight. Using the tractor and a pry bar I could not get another log down for cutting. So after 15 minutes of testing the pile I climbed up with a saw and made two cuts to "unstick" the pile. Then I was able to use the tractor to pull logs out one at a time. I was pretty nervous about doing it for fear of a weight shift sending me and the pile tumbling down.

Wow. Seems like you have a great place.

It's great to see that you both were using chaps and Head/Face/Ear protection.

I might have missed this but do you cover your split wood during the winter?

Mark
