Putting your dog down.....

I think it would be better for him/harder for me if I did it myself when he didn't know it was coming. Taking him to a vet and going in that sterile environment isn't, in my opinion, the most humane way to do it. We've always lived in neighborhoods where going to the vet was the only option but, we're moving to our land at the end of this month so I'll have to make a choice with him. I don't know what I'll do, my wife says if I do it myself it'll haunt me forever and she may very well be right but, if I can make it easier on him by sparing hi the trip to the vet maybe I owe it to him to do that.

See if the vet will visit the house. We have done this with two dogs, once in the city and once in the country. Easier on you and the dog

Dan

^^^ Ditto. Our vet sent out a tech. and didn't even charge us. Knew we would be getting another dog... with plenty of trips to the vet.

We've had 3 horses and a pony put down. We called the vet and he did them standing as we gave them a treat as he injected the shot. Fell hard on their sides. I used a backhoe and dug their graves- though the pony died during the winter - used an old blanket covering, old hay and hay bales, later threw horse manure on top. It's all sunk into the ground and we plant flowers and no care vegetables there. Colic took 2, throat tumor the pony, arthritic knees to the point our 15yr old quarter horse thouroughbred could not rise from laying down. All were mercy killings. Our sick cats generally take themselves off and die. but we brought one to the vet after an injury that paralyzed its back legs. Never fun.
A horse/dog trainer I used to work for after college, used to shoot his occasional dog that was not safe. ---re shooting horses, I've heard stories of troopers attempting to shoot a horse in the head that was injured on the highway, and it taking 3 shots before penetrating the skull.
One does what one has to. As a kid the sick cows/calves were sold to the butcher who came and picked them up while alive.
