Blade tip speed will make a Hugh difference for sure. Is it possible someone changed the main drive pulley to slow down the mower?

I don't think they changed the main drive pulley, I purchased it new...

Leejohn - I will check the belt to see if it is tight, perhaps it is needs tightening.

I tend to start the season off by pulling the blades on everything from, my small self propelled pushmower, lawn tractor, and the 3pt mower. The blades on the riding mower are the same length as the 3pt mower. Significant difference in the physical size of the blade(s) however, between the two.

I hope that the belt is loose and that will fix/improve blade speed. If it doesn't, I will be looking at increasing the main drive pulley to speed thing up under there..... I have no idea how to go about doing this though, as I am unsure how you guy's are figuring the math to calculate your "tip" speed?

Ok I miss understood thought it was used when you bought it. It's not hard to figure blade speed just takes a few math calculations , should be able to find info or some calculators on line to help. If not someone here will be able to guide you. Deck design and blade choice also plays a big part along with ground speed.

How tall is the grass you are cutting? If I let mine get too tall, it doesn't matter if I have brand new blades on it, the finish isn't all that appealing. For a finish mower to give you a nice looking cut, you have to cut the grass regularly. Another factor is how fast are you driving while you cut the grass? Too fast and it will look terrible. In bahia, I have to slow down a lot compared to when I'm cutting Bermuda grass.

I rarely sharpen my blades. I've found that they start leaving ridges in the grass when they replacing. A good set of blades will last me all season, and I usually just replace them after the first cutting in spring. I'm planning on ordering blades tonight or this week.

I would not modify blade speed. I've found that when you change something, other things happen that you never expected and the results are always expensive.
