Quad tires for PT Tires

Should have bought those tires and rims JJ told us about. I am really glad I did. $50 for tires and rims - hard to beat. I liked them so much I bought more as spares.

Yup... bummer... Well, you are the king of deals, I am sure you will find them again and let me know.....

This week I had to replace my quad tires (they were due) and my truck tires - they were not due. I need to figure out what kind of tires I want on the PT. I have both Carlisle balloons (factory) and then I have skid steer. Never sure of the side holding on the skid steer.

Anyone have thoughts on that?

What do you mean by "Never sure of the side holding on the skid steer"?

I think he means that he's not sure of the sidehill traction of the R-4 skidsteers tire, compared to R-1 ag lugs. IMO, Unless you plan to use chains or use the PT on your lawn, the R-1 at lugs are clearly the way to go. But, the Carlisle Super Lug is one of the poorest lug tires out there, IMO, because it has fewer lugs and wider spaces between the lugs.

Yeah, sorry, referring to slope tractions. Getting up at 45 degrees, The Carliisle are all soft and bouncy, the Skids Steer tires are like rocks. Wondering how traction is effected, or should I say stiction?

I have the Carlisle R-4s. Chains definitely improve the traction when I'm brush cutting behind a 72" brush cutter. Whenever it is wet, or I'm cutting something slimy, I always use chains.

I think it comes down to your soil, and what you are trying to do. My clay soil goes from mush to gravelly dust in a couple of weeks. When it is mush, I don't even try to take the tractor out on a 25 degree slope. Mostly I spin out going straight up hill on the dry stuff, though I side slip a little. On wet, slimy cut thistle, the side slip is noticeable, but with chains, much, much lower. Ag bar tires would be worse- for me.

All the best,

Peter

[Trying to think of why this would not work, outside of a clearance issue, but wondering if I could use a quad tire on the ol PT. Next year will be tire replacement year.... and as I have 11 tires to replace, gonna need some serious cash to pull this off. Found some quad tires I liked the tread pattern on and was just thinking it through.]

I have an older PT-422 with the same body style as the newer PT-425.

I just put on a set of Kenda K502 4-ply off-road tires in size 23-10.5-12 designed for the small truck-like quads. They have a load rating in excess of 1340 pounds...very typical for a 4-ply tire which was standard on my machine. (Like the Carlisle turf tires and many of the tractor lug tires.)

I wanted the traction of the lugged tire, but need the turf-friendly behavior of the flatter treads. I think this is a great solution somewhere in the middle.

My property is a mix of woods, turf, and mud and is sloped at up to 25 degrees (much steeper than 25%) in places. These tires provide traction sufficient to climb the muddy hills in the steepest areas . I was amazed when I took it out the first time. It was raining and had made the hills too slick to walk on. The machine drove down, stopped and then backed up the hill with ease. Further, the tearing on the soil was minimal. I was impressed after slidding down these same hills in the dry on the turf tires.

As for load; the rating for the tires allows my weight, the full weight of the machine, and the full 800+ pounds of lift (ready to tip forward) to be safely carried by the front tires alone with 500 pounds to spare. Thus even on a side slope fully loaded, the downhill tire should safely stay in range. Further, these tires are designed for full load at up to 60 miles per hour, making the rating at slow speeds even a bit more conservative as it will not have the same heat generation.

If interested, they can be had on line for $144/pair with $25 delivery. My local shop mounted them for $25 for the 4. (Yes he is inexpensive) Thus, 4 new shoes for $375.

Rick
Still going strong after 2800 hours....but with new tires.

I think once you get up in the 45% range, stiction is probably the better word!

Just to save others have having to google, here is what they look like:

Those look like a good compromise between lugged and turf tires.

Where did you buy them from? That sounds like a killer deal.

I wish that tire came in 24x12x12 for an F3680. The turf master tires on it now just are not that good. The closest I've found is the Carlisle HD Field Trax ATV Tire, but it's not a 4 ply tire.
