One request for all of you just getting into LED's

If you have a smartphone get an app that measures light such as Lux or some other light meter. Then measure brightness with the old light before you install the new light. Get hard data versus feel good data.
.

Anyone know of smart phone app that measure lux and color temp?

wngsprd, I like almost everything about those Feits except for the 38 deg beam spread. Those are NOT "floods" IMHO, they are spots. Did you notice that the ad copy/specs say in one place that the life expectancy is 25k hrs, and 50k hrs in another !?!

Aaron, how many hours have you accumulated on those LE fixtures? Any evidence of dimming?

I only have probbaly 20-30 hours on the 50w ones and 40-60 hours on the 20w ones. No changes noted so far (one of the 50w ones had a bad power supply out of the box, it would flicker/strobe at 20-40 hertz most of the time when you turned it on (flipping it off then on got it to stay on). The seller sent me a new one but I haven't gotten around to installing it yet.
I also have some 10w ones (also 6000k) and those are probbaly pushing 500-1000 hours (they were used to light up the Nativity scene for Christmas), no noticeable difference there either.

Any of the electronic whizzes on here have an opinion or preference for single large LEDs vs an array of small ones for a given wattage? Which configuration is liable to be more reliable and have better life?

The LE fixtures appear to have a single large LED. 3W LED Floodlight - Flood Lights | LE(R)

Other fixtures have arrays. Solla 3W LED Flood Lights Outdoor Security Lights Super Bright Floodlights Waterproof Landscape LED Spotlights Wall Light Lamp, 225LM, Warm White (27-35K), 144LEDs - - Amazon.com

As far as life span - a story-
About 20 or thirty years ago SWMBO gave to a lot of charities. One in particular was always selling "5 year light bulbs". The darn things burned out quickly. So I got in the habit of writing the date I installed the bulb on it's base with a Sharpie. SWMBO got mad when I started showing her they 5 year bulbs were burning out in 1 year.

I continued that as we transitioned into CFL's and have not found many burning out quickly. I've done that with my new LED's and have a tube or two that burned out quickly.

When we designed/built the house we specified 85ish can lights inside and outside. I think that includes the flood lights on the corners. But maybe not. :confused3::rolleyes: Anywho, I put in CFLs from Home Depot. Those CFLs lasted for years. In fact, the CFLs in the flood lights are still working and they are 11 years old. I think all of the porch CFLs in cans are still working after 11 years. These lights don't get used much and I would guess the most used CFLs in the house started failing after threeish years which was about what one would expect.

The problem was that many of the R40/R30 CFLs from Lowes would burn out quickly so I started writing the date I put the lights into service on the bulb. I also kept the receipts and I would take them back to Lowes if they failed within a few months but it got so bad I just stopped buying the Lowes brand R30/40 CFLs. Now I buy Sylvania regular CFLs which seem to work pretty well but I still write the date on the bulb.

Seems like LED's are getting to the right price point so I might finally buy some, but when I do, I will write the date on the bulb.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

Dan the Cree brand is all I have bought but they are all still burning. they also don't seem to have any RFI emissions, or at least not any I can find. They are still 2 or 3 times the price of some of the store brands, but I think they are a better LED. bulb. I have the original 60 and 40 watt A19 style and some of the newer "4 flow" and and some of the original BR30 with the heat sinks and some of the newer ones. All have worked ( I have several dozen total) and all are still working.

I might be singing a different tune if these expensive bulbs start going out, but so far so good.
