Quest for Quiet?

I can assure you that when you hit a solid object with a bush hog while using ear protection, hearing it will not be a problem.

I've used the soft rubber gum type in ear protectors that cost about $2.00 with success. I've also used the yellow foam rollup in ear protectors and prefer the bum type. They are on a splastic connector string and I can remove them and hang them around my neck when talking to someone. I use them for all loud equipment. Like most people age 60 I'm losing my high frequency hearing and I want to hang onto what I've got left.

Gray - how did you attach the noise reduction padding to the inside of the hood? ... Scozz

Scozz,

I tried a pair of soft ear plugs in woods class today to see if they would alow me to still function and yet hear mostly what I needed to. I had to take them out every time I tried to speek to a student. Maybe they were too much or maybe my hearing has gotten bad? I remember trying them years ago and not being able to hear enough for me to keep things going safely. Seemed to be about the same.

I may cut them shorter and try agian tomarrow?

I got the sound deadening liner material from West Marine. It comes with a pressure sensitive adhesive on it with a waxed paper cover. You cut it to size ( i used heavey sissors ) peel the paper off and press it into place. It worked great. It is about 1/2 inch thick and is fire resistant. I did put it on the inside metal surfaces of the hood sections.

As I have stated, it helped to some extent. It cut down on the harder engine sound.

<font color="blue"> "I will carry some ear plugs( pro ear?)" - Gray </font>

Gray, PRO EARS are NOT ear plugs! Pro ears is an electronic controlled amplified hearing system that AMPLIFIES the sound of a voice and decreases the sound of the motor. If there is a loud sound, such as throwing a chain in the bucket, or a gun shot, it will completely cut the sound out.

When I am wearing my PRO EARS, and turn them on, I can plainly hear my wife talk while the tractor is running, without them I cannot.

gray,

I'd like to try that too. How much of the sound deadening material did it take to do the job?

DocHerb,

That's a great thread. Thanks for the pointer to it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Will take more time than I have at hand right now to get through it all though...wish it were more current...lots of good discussion on the subject there...

Tom,

I got one kit. I think it was about 30" by 60"? It did the whole engine cover and fire wall with a little to spare. It came with a roll of foil tape for joints and edges. I think it was around 80$ for it?

I guess, I have to look into pro ears? I don't kknow why I didn't catch that they are ear muff type? I guess , I have too many things I am trying to do. I am going to check them out.
Even if I don't use them on the tractor I may find them good for my classroom job and grinding or sand blasting I do on occation.

Thanks to all. I enjoy learning new things. This is one place to do alot of this.

Do they have a version that will allow you to hear the tractor and tune your wife out? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The electronically controlled noise reduction systems of today really do work well. My wife is a international flight attendant and most of her peers suffer from hearing loss after years of jet engine drone. She uses a set of Bose noise reduction head phones on breaks during flights and they are very effective. I’ve used them on the tractor and they make a huge difference without cutting the sounds you want to hear. My problem is she won’t let me use them very often. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
