That's why I did the math on the force with a 5" cyl and 100 psig. I also included spurts and mentioned why and included mentioned having a place for it to land. I've done it and it tain't no big deal.

The force isn't the problem, it's the stored energy exploding.......I do cylinders for a living and never let my guys do this, it's not worth the danger or the worth the damage to equipment when parts are launched

Just my opinion, don't mean to step on toes, it's just not safe advice to a DIY'er

My advice would be......"Don't force it, Get a bigger hammer"

Well when I restored my JD 157 loader the loader lift arm cylinders did not want to come apart, even with a comealong and everything else I tried. So, after a lot of exasperation I got out the air and did as I said and got the cylinders out. No big deal. Had the rear of the cylinders still attached to the loader and had square bales of hay stacked to catch the piston which went all of about 1' from the end of the tube when it landed. I work alone so there wasn't anybody to get hurt and I obviously was not in harms way as I was at the other end of the cylinder and it was secured to the tractor.

Well thanks everyone for the help relatively easy to remove and replace everything. So far no leak and working great. Now have my eye on the smaller ones where the backhoe pivots side to side where it connects near the tractor. Looks like a snap ring holds those in instead of a threaded type gland ring, one is leaking pretty bad. I'm including a pic of the inside of the ram I just rebuilt.
