Price Check Question about price of a used TC40

It has been a while since I looked at the TC line but what does the D stand for on the earlier TC's? Is it just a designation for the hydro?

Anyway to my main question, there is a used TC40 (don't know if it has a D or not but it is a gear drive) with 275 hours give or take a few. It has the 16LA loader, FWA with loader R-1's and it has the quick tach heavy duty bucket. THe guy wants $16,500 for this tractor and for $17k he will toss in the pallet forks for the loader and a grader box (don't remember if it was a land pride or what brand).

This tractor will be used on a farm to run a NH 145 spreader on a daily basis and might get to pull a NH 489 haybine to cut pastures with. Will a TC40 hold up and be able to handle this equipment on hills? Ideally we would just look at another TN for the farm but price is a big factor right now and a TN set up like mine is out of reach for the farms budget.

One more thing, is there anything to look for? This tractor was bought a couple years ago and I know some people have had problems with this class machine so what are the common issues to look at? Thanks guys.

The "D" suffix does stand for Deluxe.

It includes items such as:
Foldable ROPS (vs. rigid)
Premium seat with swivel and adjustable suspension (vs simple spring suspension)
Hydrostatic transmission with Cruise Control
High/Low range selection switch
Right-side step (in addition to left-side step)
Tilt/Telescoping Steering Wheel
Coolant temperature gauge (vs. light)
Parking Brake indicator light
Telescoping lift arm links
Crank leveling for the right lift arm (vs. turnbuckle)
and a "toolbox".

Problems to look for:
* Battery induced corrosion around hydraulic cooler
* If hydrostatic, make sure the tractor comes to a stop when you release the hydraulic pedals, especially while under load.

Can you get a D model in gear format then? This machine is a gear drive with the shuttle but has most of the features you described and I am almost certain it was a 40D but I can't remember as the loader blocks it. I will check the battery compartment as I remember those discussions so thanks for that reminder.

I assume then the $17k is a good price?

To my knowledge, you can't get a "D" model in 12x12 SSS, but the Deluxe 3-pt hitch (telescoping links and crank level adjuster), the Quick Attach Loader, "toolbox", and the foldable ROPS can be ordered as options on the the gear model.

As to price, I'd wait for Jinman to chime in (or PM him), as he is up on the market valuations/price - much more so than I. Will need the number of hours on the tractor.

Mine is a "DA" 35 not 40, but I think the same thing.
You will NOT get the tilt/telescope steering wheel, swivel seat or toolbox and additional step. The Park Brake light, coolant temp gauge and "deluxe" 3 Point were all standard on mine, but I don't know if that's because it's a newer model or not.
Some of the options are ONLY factory when you are looking at a Hydro.

Robert, there was one item Chris (DocHeb) left out on his list of "D" options that's easy to spot. That's the thick rubber floormat. If you see a tractor from a distance, you can normally spot a "D" by looking to see if it has a floormat. Of course, the bright orange hydro pedals and the big joystick with the orange plastic insert are also pretty easy to spot.

Since the tractor has the quick-attach loader and also a NH HD quick-attach bucket, it must not be too old, probably a late 2002 or 2003 before they went to the "DA" or "A" models with the slanted headlights. When I bought my tractor (a 2001) the quick-attach loader was not available.

As Chris mentioned, you really need to know how many hours are on the tractor. If it's under 500, the 15% off purchase price is a fair price. If it's over 1000 hr, I think I'd push for 20% unless the tractor was spotless and he had full maintenance records.

Trying to establish the original cost of the tractor is the tough part. My guess would be around $19,000. Since you have such a good relationship with your dealer, he could probably give you a good ballpark figure of the tractor's original cost. If the tractor is obviously in good shape and low hours. $16,500 is definitely a good price. I think I'd take the additional pallet forks and scraper too. Heck, you could probably resell them by themselves and cover that extra $500.

Almost certainly the tractor will have battery acid damage to the front shelf and radiator. Don't buy it without lifting hood and looking at this area. You might even use the condition of that area to get another few dollars off if it's in bad shape. I'd say $500 less if there's a lot of rust around there. You might find yourself having to replace the radiator soon.

You will probably feel like you are driving a sports car compared to your TN, but these are capable little tractors. If you buy it, go over the undercarriage to look for loose bolts and retighten them well. I found several bolts worked loose on my tractor, and you don't want to take a chance on doing damage when you do heavy loader work. You'll also want to add as much ballast as possible. I think these tractors are really overpowered for their approx. 3400 lb without the loader. If you can get the weight up to around 5000 lb, I think you'll feel much more stable. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks Jim, my first post listed the hours at around 275. I remember when this tractor was delivered and it was in the last year or two and is not a A model. My dealer was closed and I decided to talk to people who use these machines instead of the guys who sell them. I have not run a TC but do own a 1920 which was replaced by the TC35-45 line. To be honest, my TN is a sports car compared to the ride of the 1920 as the short wheel base is a killer on rough fields. I am about to head over that way again and will take some pics and look over the tractor better this time.

Do you think it will pull a 177 bushel manure spreader? It has R-1's and they are loaded but I would hate to find out it doesn't have enough power to spread up hill. Thanks for replying and I will let you know what I learn.

It is a standard TC40 with the adjustable sway bars, extendable ends and adjustable right lift arm. I popped the hood and there are no signs of any issues with the battery. It has the standard, non tilting steering column which makes no difference to me and the actual hours are 276. There is a small dent in the front grill that you only notice if you are trying to figure out how to open those little hoods. Nice of NH to hide the hood release under the tractor. The larger tractors have the release built into the front grill making it easy to get at but I guess it is one of those things that people get use to.
