Question about setting up hydraulics on grapple??

/ Question about setting up hydraulics on grapple?? #31
(I want to think I read reports in the past of graples losing their grip, so to speak, due to leakage throught the control valve.)

I used my grapple to move a bunch of trees and brush and haven't experienced this issue while controling my grapple through a rear remote. Once my grapple gets a hold of something it doesn't let go until I release its grip. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bill when I was planning my grapple the pilot operated check valves were on my mind as well. I was a bit baffled that the folks that manufacture ready made grapples hadn't even considered using them on their cylinders. Figured if I needed one after mine was put together and working that one could easily be added later on.

Well now that I've had many an opportunity to use one the pilot operated check valve would be an unnecessary expense, at least in our application.

It may just be the way we use ours that doesn't warrant one. We use a snatch and jerk method to make the initial lift, then when the load is in the air we curl the bucket back wards resting the load squarely on the bucket. At that point the grapple itself isn't doing much but keeping the load steady on the bucket and it would be pretty hard to drop the load even while transporting long distances over rough terrain.

I hope this isn't to confusing to understand.

Thanks for the help everyone. I took delivery of the bucket today and was very surprised at how heavy it was. I ended up going with a Virnig Mfg. utility bucket with grapple. It weighs just over 900lbs. I am going to run the lines to the rear remote for a while. I'm going to plan on adding a couple sets of remotes when I get the first service done to it but that will likely be a while until that happens. So for now I'll just use the rear remotes. Thanks again for all the help.
