John Deere 2520
Just took delivery of a new 2520 with FEL and Backhoe and have a question about street pads (or flip pads as some people refer to them) for the backhoe stabilizers.

I know John Deere doesn't offer them. I found the fabricated ones that Chris2520 made in the archives which are rather costly and very labor intensive to build.

I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a low cost way to modify the existing pads for use on pavement or sidewalks. I have some backhoe projects around the house where it would be desirable to have something soft under the stabilizer pads instead of the pointed factory metal ones.

I was thinking about trying to find a hard rubber block and cutting it to fit inside the metal points but hang down lower to prevent the points from contacting the pavement. The blocks could than be drilled and held in place with a bolt(s) through the stock metal pad. Anyone done anything like this or have any ideas on where you can buy hard rubber blocks that could be cut and shaped with a bandsaw?

Thank you.

If you only need then occasionally, maybe you could cut a section out of an old tire and wrap it up?

What about a old conveyor belt? Cut pieces out of it possibly? Just my .02

Agree-I would just cut sections of tire and stack them together- Or how about cutting some oak blocks? there is a hole through the pad, just use a carriage bolt as the fastener.

Couple of pieces of 3/4" plywood stacked together and bolted thru the hole in the stabilizer pad.

Could make it oversized a bit to keep the stabilizer from creating some big holes in the yard, etc.

i would be more worried about putting a lot of weight down in a single spot. vs scrapping / scratching concrete / pavement. and in that DIY some wooden pads. out of say 2x12's stacked 2 to 3 high. a couple feet wide x couple feet long or 3 feet x 3 feet.

i say above, because you can get some hammering and jacking around of the backhoe, and put lots of weight onto a single stabilizer leg real quick. and in that, if you could break the sidewalk or pavement with a 10lb sledge hammer. i would be looking at more wider pads. and if possible keeping the legs off of the concrete / pavement all together.

i would stay away from plywood for pads. exception of say needing to drive across wet yard. and not wanting to put ruts in the yard via tires. plywood just flexes to much. when laid down flat.

I took a rubber wheel chock , and cut it in half, and bolted it on.I cut it with a sawzall . The rubber is 1 1/4 inches thick.

There's a whole slew of high-density plastics available that you could adapt for that kind of purpose!

The question here seems to be: cost and ease of implemention - adapting.

A JD 46 hoe on a JD 2520 doesn't weigh anything remotely close to either a 555 or my JD 110 TLB for that matter!!!

A 12"x12" sandwich of doubled-up 3/4" plywood or 2"x6" etc. is not going to unduly flex to extent that anything catastrophic is likely to occur!!!

This isn't the space shuttle; people!
