Question, buying Used or New?????

/ Question, buying Used or New????? #11
The one thing about buying new is you know how the tractor was taken care of. When you buy used you don't know if the oil was changed reguarly or if fluid even got checked that much. I bought used in the past and got some good deals, but the deals they are running right now are too good to pass up. I bought a McCormick CT65U and it had a free FEL. Alot of them are running 0% financing for 72 months.

The thing about used is it usually cost more than new when you add the finance charges to the used unit.

That might apply if the tractor is less then a year old, but one does have read the financial contract pretty closely.
The 2000 4400 I just bought had 1% financing (I only financed a couple thousand for 2 years (be paid off in a year)...

So, a used machine may not cost as much or more then a new machine...but read the paperwork before you sign!

BigWaveDave, as in most things, there are no absolutes. Like I said, I have done both. I can tell you whoever buys my used tractor is definitely going to have their work cut out for them and needs to enjoy working on them. If it was any good, I would keep it.

I guess I didn't state my real question very well. I'll try again.

Do you feel better about your purchase because it's new with a Warranty, or does buying used make you feel like that tractor has gone through its 'inaugural shakedown cruise'? Therefore, if something wasn't quite right when brand new, it's been found and addressed.

I'm fine with used, but I have enough mechanical aptitude to know if I'm getting a good machine. Like anything, there is no 100% certainty.
It's highly unlikely I'd buy any tractor or vehicle new.

Yeah I'm on the other side of the discussion. I started out mowing my 3 acres with a regular riding mower, moved to a zero turn, them a 30Hp tractor then to a 40 Hp tractor with a 7 foot mower.

Now my wife is talking about going back to school and not working for 2.5 years. I bought my current tractor because we had planned to upgrade to more land. But now we're talking about downsizing while she's in school and then buying something bigger when she gets out of school. So I'm not really looking to sell my tractor which has slightly less than 100 hours, I don't want to have to take that big of a hit compared to a new tractor with 0% for 60 months. If the economy was better or the financing deals weren't so great I could probably sell it and do ok but currently I'm afraid I'd have to price it as a deal someone couldn't refuse to move it. Plus I still need something to cut grass the zero turn beat me up in my bumpy yard. I also have a pile of attachments I'd have to sell and buy again later. So for now I'm taking a wait and see attitude.

TripleR, I like your blunt and forward honesty about the fact that you've pretty much used up that tractor.

RoyJackson,
I don't have X-Ray vision either, but I'm with you on the mechanical aptitude and being able to do a pretty thorough job of looking yea old horse in the mouth.

cspot,
I can't argue that point of knowing a tractor's history, but when I go to look at something I'm considering buying, I take a lot of stock in how its surrounding environment looks. That can tell you a lot about the person's personality and how that probably translates into how they treated their equipment.

Mostly I bought mine new because I was afraid of buying a used one and not really knowing its maintenance history. Wife agreed with me. Bought new as I feel it will keep its value fairly well and as stated in my previous post came with 4 year warranty. So yes, I feel much better getting a new one. :) Doing my own work on it, regular oil/filters changes and lube so know it is well looked after.

BigWaveD,

I believe you have to be honest with people and fully disclosed this to the salesman. It cost me money on the trade-in, but I will sleep better.

I usually keep my cars and trucks a minimum of ten years and they are pretty well used up. We have a couple of tractors over fifty years old my brothers still use as well as one about forty and another thirty. They still work pretty well, so no reason to get rid of them yet.

Mousefield,
I can totally see your line of thinking as far as service history. Also, consider yourself quite fortunate for having such an 'understanding' woman.

Big dollars for a toy/tool usually cause some marital friction. Glad for you. I feel fortunate to be in your boat. My wife encouraged me to get what I wanted, though it was used, not new.

Amen brother, I am brutally honest, to my detriment, I'm sure, but I too sleep better knowing that the person new both the good AND the bad about what I was selling.

I bought new - here's why:

1) After doing much research on what I needed for what I planned to do I spent about 3 months checking the local used market and couldn't find anything that wasn't either high hours or almost new price.

2) It was my first ever tractor of any kind and I didn't know squat about how to evaluate a used machine. Plus I didn't know anybody who did that I could take along with me.

3) Gritted my teeth & went to green & orange dealerships and liked what I saw at both. Also liked the dealerships - so different from buying a car.

4) Really liked the 0% financing as money has been tight.

3 years later; never needed the waranty, but had it just in case. 1 more payment left and it's mine and no regrets about my purchase.
