I need to open up one end of this 12'x20' gazebo. It's supported by 4x4's 4' on center. I was hoping I could use a double 2x10 or ? and connect to the end 4x4's so I can remove the two inner 4x4's as shown in the picture that the clock and thermometer are mounted on. Thoughts please? And thanks in advance for any suggestions..

How far are those posts apart, how long a span are you talking about? That would matter.

They're 4' apart and it spans 12'

So, you will have a 12' opening with 4x4s on each end of the 12' beam?

Go to your local building supply and pose the question there. I would think an engineered microlam would leave you with the most headroom for your view out that end of the gazebo. That is what you are trying to accomplish by removing the 2, 4 x 4 posts, yes?

Correct, that's the plan anyway..

The view isn't important .. We're going to pour a slab in the space between the gazebo and fence and build an outdoor fireplace.

So I take it the gazebo is not screened in?
I suspect what you'll have to do is support the end of the gazebo and remove the two 4 x 4's then cut the other two at that end and place a microlam on top of the two you shorten, to allow for the overall height of the support structure to remain the same, and still be able to span the gap with adequate strength to handle snowload for your zone.

That makes sense, thanks !! No, it's not screened in. It used to be but got kind of claustrophobic and the bugs still seemed to find their way in.. The goal is fireplace in the middle this Fall, then a pizza oven on one side and gas grill on the other eventually..

Coyote is correct go to your lumber yard with your picture and the size of the structure, explain to them what you are looking to do and they will have the beam (LVL) spec'ed for you at no cost. As far as installing the beam you could cut the 2 end post to rest onto of them. You could just add a 2x4 or the 4x4 you are removing up against the existing end ones. When they spec the beam they will also tell you what you need for bearing surface. Once done you could wrap it in pine to look as one. You have alot of different ways to make the connections to support the beam along with the finishing. You will also need to use some type of simpson connector as just toe nailing doesn't really cut it. You could also ask the lumber yard about the proper connection. When taking your measurement you will want the clear span in between the two corner post. If i would have to guess i would think you are going to need 3- 12" lvl or 2- 14" lvl. Let us know how you make out. If you go with a 3 wide member beam you'll have to change out your 4x4 over to a 6x6 for bearing. Good luck with your project. I am not sure where you are from in CT but Kelly Fradet is a great lumber yard to deal with.
