Dear KentT,
What you are suggesting for a second set of wheels to float is actually sold for skid steers. There is a link in the archives.

At some point, either for slope or for surface reasons, any tire will lose traction. Sometimes floation helps, sometimes it hurts. If there was a single way to do it, you would see all of the 4x4ers and military vehicles doing it. There isn't, so we all have to adapt to local circumstances.

It seems as if you have a bunch of useful things to try, and I'll be interested to hear what works well for you. I love those Gravely wheel adapters. I bet that they make the mower much more stable.

All the best,

Peter

. Is there such a thing as too much floatation?

.

Yep. Flotation is great for keeping a light footprint on the land, but sucks on a side slope. Picture a beautiful spring morning with lots of dew on the grassy hillsiiiiiiiiiide.

fabricate a set of steel wheels similar to the ones used on the pay-loaders at the landfill , they traverse just about anywhere on the mounds with the pay-loaders, I originally thought they were implemented to avoid flat tires but the operator claimed they help with traction I am sure experience helps significantly

I think the primary purpose of those steel wheels on the landfill machines is trash compaction. ;)
