That website you put up specifically had the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Oil 5W40 that I used listed as approve for use. I'm I missing something here? I can notice the engine running alot quiter this the syn. And temps are already dipping into the high 30's here. The truck sure starts up better with syn.

Thanks
Matt T.

The only mobil 1 diesel synthetic around here is 15w50. We can't get the one you are using in this area. Maybe because it's a hotter climate here or something. THis is the first I've heard of the one you are using. Sorry about the confusion.

That makes more sense. When I read your post I was not happy but I'm ok now since I've done no harm to my engine.

Thanks

I'm going to try to find that oil you are using for my truck now. I really like mobil 1 oil but I didn't even know they made one that was approved for it. My engine routinely goes about 10,000 to 12,000 miles between oil changes and It would sure make me feel better having the oil I trust the most in it. I change oil every 3 months regardless of mileage and I'm due again at the end of this month. It's already over 12,000 miles now.
The mileage by itself doesn't worry me, I've run trucks on a 6 month and even a 1 year schedule and gone nearly 100,000 miles on an oil change before. Back then we did samples every month and just changed the filters every 3 months. As long as it doesn't get moisture in it and the additive levels are good then it's fine on it.
The only problem is that all those extended oil changes were done with mobil 1 oil and untill now it wasn't available for a power stroke. The fleetguard additive is good but I can't get that around here either. The IH dealer here is about worthless.

I switched from 10W-30 Dino to 5W-40 Rotella Syn in a Kubota engined genset I have. After the change I started it up..sitting next to it on a step stool to watch it for any leaks..etc before buttoning it all up. After about 1 1/2 minutes of running ..it went "silent"..??? Quieted down to a cats purr. WHY? I have no idea...but it did as a fact!

How many hours on a new diesel tractor would you feel comfortable about changing from dyno to synthetic engine oil? Have 130 hrs on mine, good break in, but am skittish about going w/synthetic at this point. thanks bb

I changed over all six of mine @ 50 hours.

5,000 hours later, none of them have ever consumed any oil inbetween change outs.

I'm about to put Rotella-T 5w-40 in my JD with just over 100 hours... the first oil change for it (per spec). I wouldn't hesitate at 130 hours. I don't think I would hesitate even at 10 or 20 hours, if you want to change that early (I didn't), provided the tractor had been used hard for at least a couple of those hours.

I'd be more cautious about switching to synthetic on an old engine than a new one. Old ones seals are saturated with oil already and the synthetic seems to just wash it away and run right on through more often than not. Especially on ones with old felt or leather seals.
Newer fords aren't too great, like trucks built in the 80's and 90's. I definitely wouldn't switch one of them to syn without rebuilding the engine first.

NH recommends their first oil change at 50 hours and that's when I switched. Pretty close to it anyway.
