"However.. to clarify a point.. I wasn't specifying musicians that made lots of money.."

Hey, my comment was directed to cowboydoc who did state that "most" musicians make so much money that $30 million would seem like "chump change". Let's define chump change -- at the most, it would be a nickel on a dollar (probably more like a nickel on $10), so that implies that most musicians make more than $600 million per year (the $30 million quoted is an existing annual salary range for some professional athletes). I'm on your side in this discussion, Sounguy, as my daughter is also a music teacher -- she's a high school band director.

But, now that you've brought it up, how come by your definition Placido Domingo is not a musician (you termed him a "vocalist") but Michael Jackson is? Even calling Michael Jackson a "vocalist" would be stretching things, while to call Placido Domingo merely a "vocalist" would be like calling Pope John a "preacher".

( The purpose of a high school athtletic program is not to .......create a well rounded individual )

First.. you are expanding this away from my original post.. my original post was football.. not athletics in general. As for well rounded individuals.. I guess that includes college majors like 'Clownology' .. that seems like an easy subject for a football player on scholarship to take? ( That's a real course of study at one of florda's 4 year state universities.. there are dozens of other 'fluffy' 4 year degree programs that are populated with similar scholarship holders. )

( And as far as jobs no way do I believe that music produces more jobs in the country as a whole than sports related jobs )

Again.. you are bending my original question so as to make it fit other facts. I didn't specify athletic related activities. I was pretty cut and dry... musicians and pro football players...

However if you get into related fields.. I'm still guessing music related jobs will outweigh sports related jobs. Keep in mind that both fields are going to dip into the technical industry.. however I truly believe that if you went down and seperated them.. music has more reaching feelers.

Just about every motion picture that has had sound.. had music. Many had music before dialog. TV shows have music.. radio is music and commercials interlaced..Cell phones make music. the industry of radio's, , cd players.. etc.. handheld mp3 players.. computers.. ite.. are all involved with music reproduction.

Heck.. they just recently measured cosmic waves from deep space and translated them into some weird inaudible sounds on a scale way to low for humans to percieve.

You have to take into accountall the tech people involved with the music.. all the way down to the roadie who sets the mic up to the mixer, recording eng.. re-recording eng.. editor, etc.. etc.

Hit a movie and watch the credits. The largest portion of the credits goes to video. next largest goes to sound and score.. then you get incedentals and actors.

I realize that as an entertainment industry that sports will have it's own far reaching production based technical jobs... but if you look at the numbers.. there are a whole lot more Paramounts, MGM's, and other super media companies.. disney, sony.. etc.... than football teams.

With the advent of XM radio, you are even drawing in a new field of people into the music industry. Manufactureres.. satalight controllers .. software engineers.. telecommunication people..etc.. etc.

Entertainment as a whole is probably the largest money outlay in america. and I will agree that athletic entertainment is a large portion of it.. but no where near half of it.

You didn't read all of my post. At the end.. I did lump all vocalist ( singers) and musicians together. Michale jackson is only a singer as well.. just like placido domingo.. unless either one of them plays an instrument. And that's the defining difference between a musician and a vocalist.. if they play an instrument. In band terms.. if you've got 4 guys in a band.. and one is a singer.. you bill it as a 3+1.. iff all four play.. then it is a 4 piece.. If they are real jokers.. it is a 2 piece with a singer and a drummer! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The reason I brought up the point.. is many 'rock stars' or other super popular people do not fit the classical deffinition of 'musician'. Many o fthe famous people we just listed dont.. for instance the king of pop, and mr domingo... For easy of counting.. I ded expand it to covwer all the pople you see performing.. whether vocally, or with an instrument.

You seem to equate 'vocalist with some 'lower' level.. it isn't.. it;s just a defining mark. And as for michale j being a stretch for vocal talent. I'd imagine his wallet would argue with you.. he's probably one of the richest one out there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ( one of the weirdest too! )

McCartney is the richest musician over 1 billion.
I think Oprah is way up there ,Bill Cosby over a billion.
Heck if I was completely debt free I would feel rich......... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

for one the country living board on y t m a g.com is a pretty decent board with limited sensorship, and over on n e w a g t a l k.com also there isnt much of a problem with saying what you like. and there are other disscusion boards too that are not so much to do with country living but still a good deal of rural info so to speak, shop floor talk.com is very uncensored yet ya will notice there rarely is a problem, forestry forum.com also is about the same, but they get a little uptight about posting links to folks bussinesses who arnt sponsors but thats understandable. theres alot of them out there ya just gota look for them, unfourtanatly much like microsoft is popular just cause it was first, tractorbynet seems to have become popular just cause its been around for a while and thus everyone thinks its best

"much like microsoft is popular just cause it was first"

I think if you look into it, you will find that Apple pre-dates Microsoft.

"tractorbynet seems to have become popular just cause its been around for a while and thus everyone thinks its best "

I have to disagree. The caliber of (most of) the people on this site is what draws me here every day. The information that can be found on this site is astounding and can be had just for the asking. Not once have I asked a question and been told that if I was asking a dumb question like that I had better go back to school...like I have at Yesterdays Tractors.

Unfortunately.. Apple didn't have good marketing practices.. much like comedore.. and to show for it.. their business is a whopping ~ 3% of the market.

Too bad about ytmag. there are some well informed people over there as well.

If it was a single individual that drove you away.. don't let them bother you... there is still good content there. I bounce back and forth between about 4-5 boards.. and ytmag and tbn have the most readership and content.

I do too, and YT is one of them. There is definitely a wealth of knowledge there also.
Besides, it takes more than 1 cranky old fart to drive me away. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

That would be close. When the Apple was still in kit form, basically being sold out of the garage and mostly one at a time at computer shows, Bill Gates had already written the BASIC language operating system for the TRS80 Model I. Radio Shack licensed it from Microsoft. It's a moot point, anyway, because Apple has always been primarily a hardware company and Microsoft is primarily a software company.
